A volunteer writes: So sweet, she had my heart at her first shy glance. She looks up with bowed head and low body, clearly not sure about people and their intentions. She easily stepped out of her kennel, peed the moment we were out the door and we walked together down the street. I stopped to talk to a staff person and she sat, then lay, by my side to wait out my conversation. She’s such a good girl!! A pretty brindle girl, she looks like she may have been a mom once. Off leash in the backyard she absolutely and joyfully comes to life around other dogs, tail wagging happily and excitedly, so clearly wanting to play. She actually lay down by the gate separating her as if to give her a sense of closeness and telling us, ‘I like that dog and want to be close’. When I sat on the ground with her she came into me, rolling in submissively and giving me gentle kisses. While she’s still stressed and nervous, it’s so clear she wants to be friends but just isn’t sure how her overtures will be received. I hugged her close and promised her a home in which she will be loved, feel safe and will be allowed to trust on her own timetable. Please help me make my promise to this sweet girl come true. We don’t know what went on in her life before, but can promise her a better future. She deserves it. A Volunteer Writes: Wallah makes us sing-literally. Another pal of hers and I started singing some silly song from childhood that had “Wallah Wallah” as our hearts lit up watching this girl come into contact with other dogs. She is scared in the shelter, but when she sees another dog the blissed out companion she might be with some human love is instantly apparent: She is joyful, hopping with happiness, waggy, and so playful she makes us giggle. Despite her timidity she is craving kind attention, coming to sit against people’s legs even though it makes her shake, because she still believes enough in our potential kindness to be brave. We can’t say enough to champion her. She may have been done wrong, but she still believes that we can do better-please, won’t you prove her right?
04/29/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Wallah came to our center as a stray on 4/27/2015. She walked nicely on leash for her relief walk. Wallah entered the SAFER assessment room nervous and cautious, sticking close to the assistant who walked her in. She held gaze for Look item but with body a bit tense. She flinched each time she was touched on Sensitivity item, with her tail down, licking her lips. Wallah was uncomfortable during Tag with low body, although her tail was wagging. She would not allow paw squeeze, flipping her head and moving her body away so the item could not be conducted. Wallah needed some time before she was comfortable moving on to flank, where Wallah quickly moved her body away for first flank squeeze, but had no reaction on second flank squeeze. She ceased eating for Food item. Minimal interest in toys and rawhide, sniffing and then turning away. Wallah was playful and social with other dogs during social time. The Behavior Team feels Wallah would do best in an Experienced home with no young children, where she can have a calm, structured environment without alot of noise and fast unpredictable movement, enabling her to relax and settle in to her new home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, body a bit stiff. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 3. Dog moves hip away. Flank squeeze 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push her out. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs, then walks away. Dog-to-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Wallah is bouncy and social and engages in play
