SAFE!!
A volunteer writes: At first Diesel appears to be just like any other abandoned puppy; scared, shy and not very keen to be roped by a stranger and as usual I persevere until, after a few ducks and dives, he’s all leashed up and quietly following me out to the yard. But when he stumbles over the stairs and walks directly into a fence I realize that this adorable redhead is not like other puppies at all. Diesel’s fear and confusion are so overwhelming because he is almost blind, but in spite of that he is a truly an exemplary dog. We’re told he knows ‘sit’ and is mostly house trained, never guards his toys or food and is ‘playful’, ‘confident’, ‘anxious’ and ‘friendly’. He walks fairly well on leash and I can pull him to a stop and then lay my hand on his back to indicate ‘stay’ and he seems to understand. Even the smallest step comes as a surprise to Diesel’s feet, though he never loses his balance, and I can’t help but smile when he pauses to enjoy a patch of newly seeded grass in the park. He’s happy to meet other dogs, wagging his tail and perking his ears up when they walk by but once off leash in the yard he circles and circles, avoiding my touch and softly whining, a little boy very much lost. Though he does shy away at first, I build trust through hand sniffing and a gentle voice and we slowly work our way up to body petting, though Diesel draws the line at my touching his face and head. He seems to recognize when there is a wall in front of him but has no distance perception, pawing the air until he is standing up against it and raising his head to sniff sniff sniff the air. He may be groping in the dark right now but like a young Helen Keller, with the guidance of a kind and patient teacher Diesel can learn to survive and thrive. A long, happy life is waiting just out of his reach, could you be the ‘key’ that opens the door to freedom?

Basic Info: Diesel is a 9month old Male APBT Mix. The owner received him as a gift from a friend 7months ago. Owner is surrendering due to Diesel playing rough with the Owner’s children. Diesel has no known health problems but hasn’t been to a vet. Socialization: Diesel is fearful of strangers. Diesel plays somewhat roughly with adults and roughly with children (he lived with a 10 & 5yr old). Diesel has never been around other Dogs or Cats so behaviors are unknown. Diesel has never bitten or scratched a person or animal. Behavior: Diesel uses wee wee pads indoors and also “goes” outside on gravel. During fireworks/thunderstorms Diesel isn’t bothered, “he’s calm”. Diesel isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl touched/taken away, his treats/rawhide, toys, being brushed, being held/restrained or being disturbed while sleeping/resting. While getting his nails trimmed he tries to bite. He’ll bark during/for the following: while being bathed & if someone approaches the home/family member. Diesel will growl if someone pushes/pulls him off of furniture. For a New Family to Know: Diesel is described as playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate, fearful, anxious, mellow and friendly. His activity level is described as very high. The owners’ favorite thing about Diesel is how Diesel lays next to him. Diesel’s favorite activity is playing and being a puppy. When the owner is home Diesel will stay in the same room as him. He loves his squeaky & rope toys to play fetch, chase & tug with. The Owner believes he should have a home with a yard. Diesel is an indoor Dog who sleeps in bed with the owner. Diesel eats Pedigree dry food (open bowl). Diesel is mostly housetrained, but will have accidents if left alone. When left alone Diesel is well-behaved but destroys things at times. His known commands are “sit”. For exercise Diesel went for runs with the owner, he pulls very hard on leash. When outside Diesel “goes” on gravel. Intake behavior: When approached by an admissions counselor Diesel barked & lunged. The owner scanned (neg) & collared Diesel to minimize his stress level. Diesel was difficult to place into the kennel.

05/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Diesel was a bit difficult to remove from his kennel giving a low growl with a fearful body language moving away from the leash. Once he was out Diesel walks with a low body language bumping into walls and doors. During the handling part Diesel cowered and at the same time, shows his teeth and growl. For safety reason we skip the handling part of the assessment. Diesel was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. He does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. Diesel was surrender to us. According to the owner Diesel is fearful of strangers. Diesel plays somewhat roughly with adults and roughly with children (he lived with a 10 & 5yr old). Diesel has never been around other Dogs or Cats so behaviors are unknown. Diesel owner stated that he is easy to handle when he take his food, treats or toys away from him”. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. Dog growls Food: No interest. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits.
