04/15/15 11:16 Basic Info: Stony is an 8 year old spayed dog who has no prior injuries but has had surgery 2 years ago for intestinal blockage. She has no dietary restrictions as a cause of it and has not had any other medical problems. She was surrendered to the shelter due to owner’s health. Social Life and Personality: According to owner she is relaxed and tolerant of children (lived with 3 children ages 3,4,and5) and will not play much anymore, usually looking just to be pet but when she does play it is gentle. She has not been around dogs or cats so her behaviors are unknown. She is house trained, kept mostly indoors, and has a low to medium level of energy. Behavior: She has not bitten anyone or any animal before. She has not had food taken away from her so her behaviors are unknown. She is not bothered when given a bath or brushed and is friendly when unfamiliar people approach the house or family member by approaching them, sniffing and licking them. New Family Info: She knows the commands sit, stay, and come. She rarely plays anymore but does play with balls and ropes and plays tug and chase. She has never been crate trained before and is well behaved when left home alone. She is not bothered by loud noises such as fireworks or thunder and was fed wet and dry food. Intake Behavior: During intake approached extended hand. Allowed to be scanned, collared, pictured, and leashed without aggression. When given treats took gently from and hand when touched had soft relaxed body. She would sit by admission counselor’s side throughout intake and would brush against hand to be pet.
04/19/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I love and admire a dog who keeps her spirit despite dismal circumstances. Stony is that kind of pooch. She is with us as her owner became incapacitated, unable to take care of a pet. I have no doubt that Stony got a lot of love and wonderful care in her former home. She is a chunky mama, true, but she is spayed, outstandingly groomed and mostly sociable, playful and very affectionate. She is one spunky female…I never would have guessed until she picked a ball that did to belong to her in our pen..She brought it to me…Let’s play!!!! I am not a couch potato. I have quiet times and I have fun times….So, we played and played and played, until she got tired and retired on the bench, spread her body and rested, tail gently wagging under my caresses. Stony and I had such a great time ! She needs to be discovered. A look at her kennel will not tell you anything. Ask to meet her, interact with her and you will see what I am talking about. I forgot to say the obvious..Stony aced her behavioral evaluation, walks like a dream on the leash and seems house trained….Please, do come and meet Stony at the Manhattan Care Center.
A Volunteer Wrote: I am not the volunteer who coos “fatty fats” to this delightful, delicious, round peach of a girl–but it’s possible I started singing it to her after I heard it. You’ve got to sing around Stony, if only from delight that such a dog exists. She loves playing with a ball, other dogs, and all people…even people who call her “fatty fats,” because she’s that cool. Stony is a perfect dog who additionally offers the opportunity to show off using “porcine” in sentences.
04/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stony pulls on the leash but was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. She allowed for all tactical handling items to be completed without difficulty. During Tag, she engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open, she grabs the leash very lightly but releases once the game ends and does not tug. Stony had no interest in food but engaged playfully with the toy, she kept a firm grip but her body remained loose and wiggly. Stony was relinquished to the care center by her owner who could no longer care for her. Stony lived with 3 young children who she was relaxed around and tolerant of and would sometimes engage in play it is gentle. The previous owner stated that she is house trained and well behaved when left loose in the house when no one is home. Stony did not show any concerns during the assessment and the Behavior Department believes she can go to an average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, panting, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps up once during play. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Dog sniffs hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food. No interest. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits.
