10/06/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stitch previously lived with two adults and grew up with children. The owner stated Stitch is relaxed, playful, and affectionate towards everyone he meets. The owner mentioned Stitch has a medium activity level and is house trained. The Owner describes Stitches as playful, affectionate and aloof at times. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Stitch is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. Stitch was fine when first brought into medical, he was happy and hyper and then all of a sudden when medical went to check his ears he growled and attempted to bite the medical staff along with another medical staff worker. Stitch also tried to and chased the medical staff and attempted to attack a little dog that was on the table. When retrieving Stitch from his kennel he can be seen hard barking, growling, and lunging with raised hackles in the kennel. In an attempt to see if this was just barrier motivated, staff removed him from his kennel. Upon opening the kennel door Stitch came lunging out with very stiff body language. He was highly uncomfortable and seems to react toward other dogs in their kennels. When trying to approach another dog in a kennel and stopped, Stitch immediately turned his attention to the handler and lunged. He was lunging and trying to bite the handler through the hallway as well when trying to go outside. Once outside Stitch did calm down a lot but would not allowed to be touched and maintained very stiff and rigid body language; constantly keeping the handler within sight. After the walk when bringing Stitch back into his kennel Stitch refused and immediately started trying to bite the handler. Another handler was called to help put Stitch back. A SAFER assessment will not be conducted due to safety and stress level concerns.
