10/03/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/03/15 13:53 Basic Information Teriyaki was brought in as an owner’s surrender due to owner having no time, and being unable to afford him. Owner stated that he has had Teriyaki for the past year, after purchasing him from a breeder. Owner says Teriyaki has no injuries or health concerns, and when asked what he likes most about him owner chose how good of a guard dog he is. Personality & Behavior Teriyaki is described as playful, confident, and excitable with a very-high activity level. Owner says Teriyaki isn’t house-trained, due to not being taken outside. Teriyaki lived with a 1, 2, and 3 year old child however; owner says he never let Teriyaki interact with them, due to fear of an accident possibly occurring. Owner says there have been no past issues of Teriyaki biting anyone or another animal. Owner says during feeding if reaching towards his bowl Teriyaki will growl without removing his eyes from his bowl, and begin to eat faster. Owner says he has always done this, and says he never attempted to fully take Teriyaki’s bowl. Owner says Teriyaki is cautious taking treats from someone’s hand, and will sniff and slowly take it. Owner says is fine during baths and nail trims. He doesn’t like them but will usually sit through it. Teriyaki gets friendly and becomes excited when someone unfamiliar approaches. For a New Family to Know Teriyaki understands the command sit, and does not play with toys. Teriyaki did not get much exercise and stimulation. Owner says he only took Teriyaki out maybe once per two weeks, and while home he was often chained up. Teriyaki has never been crate trained, and when home he is normally chained up. Owner says Teriyaki is unbothered by loud invasive noises. Teriyaki is normally fed Pedigree dry food, and usually sleeps in the kitchen. Behavior during Intake Teriyaki was very excited during intake, perhaps due to having no stimulation at home. He immediately leapt onto staff to show affection. Due to excitement, Teriyaki had to be distracted with treats for handling to be conducted. Teriyaki flinched when touched on his back area, and then attempted to shift his body to watch counselor. Despite excitement Teriyaki allowed handling, and demonstrated his knowledge of sit. Teriyaki allowed all handling and showed no aggression during intake.
10/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Teriyaki is a cute youngster, trim (he could use a few more pounds) and dressed in an impeccable oreo suit. He is friendly, wags his tail a lot, sits on command and for treats, comes on the lap on his own will and upon request, and takes food very politely from my hand. He is not shy or pushy, just a nice little guy, a little lost but happy to be in company. He walks well at times and pulls at others. He eliminated as we came into the yard, without marking his territory. Teriaki watches well our pen. His tail is high when another dog makes its appearance but relaxes and wags when he sees that the other pooch is nice. He is a big birds chaser and probably would do better in a house without small critters. Teriyaki is with us as his owners have no time for and can not afford a pet anymore. Our four legged friend lived with many small children but was not allowed to play with them. He was chained and basically wasn’t taken out for walks. When asked what he/she liked the most about his/her dog, the master answered: “He is a good guard dog…”. What more is there to say? Teriyaki deserves the life of a pet and to be trained to understand that humans protect their dogs and not the other way around. Teriaki is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to be your beloved and forever best friend.
10/05/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Teriyaki came to our center as an owner surrender. Owner reports Teriyaki will growl if someone reaches for the food bowl while he is eating. It is reported Teriyaki spent most of the time chained up in the house, not having a lot of stimulation. He was very excited during intake, leaping onto staff’s lap to show affection. He flinched when touched on his back area by admissions counselor, but allowed all handling. Teriyaki pulled a bit on leash for his relief walk. He jumped up and licked assessor’s face during Look item, tail wagging. Teriyaki leaned in during Sensitivity item, ears back, tail neutral. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body a bit low, sitting at assessor’s feet at end of game. Teriyaki had no response to both paw Squeeze attempts. He required a lot of pressure to lift his head out of the Food bowl, body stiff. Teriyaki growled at assess-a-hand when attempting to take Toy away. He turned quickly and bit the hand on Rawhide item, but very little pressure. Due to potential for possible possessiveness on various resources, Teriyaki must be placed with a New Hope partner. Teriyaki may require a slow introduction to mental and physical stimulation (toys, games, play, leash walks) as he has never experienced them before. Look: 1. Dog leans jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft but low. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog lifts head with a lot of pressure. Toy 1: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Rawhide: 5. Dog attempts to bite, light pressure. dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Teriyaki rushes in to greet the female greeter dog. He remains very aroused and a bit fixated during interaction (will follow with dilated pupils, ears forward, tail high). Teriyaki will engage when the other dog solicits running play, though his play style may be rooted in prey drive.
