05/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: So quiet in her upper kennel all day, each time I passed I thought to myself, ‘what a quiet, cute puppy’. Imagine my surprise when I finally met her to learn that she’s estimated to be about 2 years old…..I guess she shrunk in the wash as she’s TINY! I lifte her easily out of her kennel and off we go. Peeing as soon as we’re out the door tells me she’s likely housetrained, and when she showed me how great she is on the leash I was in love! Her caramel color coat is lush and threaded with gold, her eyes a sparkling amber and her tail never stops wagging. Snuggly and perfect she rolls in for hugs, gives kisses and cuddles in my lap. Her little frowny face can be adorable as she concentrates on the toy or treat in my hand, takes the treat but isn’t interested in the toy. Like a small dog she jumps right into my lap from the ground – no intermediate stop on the bench for Miss Spudz. I have a gazillion pictures of her as she’s a great model both on leash and off, and in each picture the one constant is that her tail is wagging. Gentle, well mannered and an absolute delight, Miss Spudz is looking for a new lap to jump into. We hope it’s yours, so come meet her today.
05/24/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Spudz was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. She was calm and relaxed during handling. During tag, she engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open. Spudz was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl and her body was a bit stiff. She had no interest in toys and minimal interest in the rawhide. Spudz was brought to the care center as a stray. Upon intake, she was friendly and easy to handle. Throughout the assessment, she remained calm and friendly toward the assessor. The behavior department believes Spudz can go to an average home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is down with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once moving ceases. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away.
05/24/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Spudz is first introduced to an energetic male and growls at the gate. She is muzzled and introduced to a calmer male. She greets with wagging tail and interacts but doesn’t play. Her muzzle is removed and she continues to interact well. 5/27 update: Spudz continues to show barrier reactivity and was again muzzled for her interaction. She is playful, using her paws to solicit play. She had her muzzle removed and continued to engage in play. She will properly correct inappropriate behavior. 5/28 update: Spudz continues to exhibit the same behaviors at the gate, high wagging wail, loose body but growling. However, upon introduction she will engage in brief bouts of play. She may be pushy and will offer appropriate correction when mounted.
