Don’t you think beautiful Archie should be in the pictures? Or at least gracing the cover of some dog-fancying magazine! This stunning pup may be of mixed parentage but his personality is classic Collie; intelligent, sensitive, excitable and friendly, and he’s thrilled to get outside for some exploration and socializing. Archie likes people but he LOVES dogs and on our walk he pulls toward every pooch we pass, regardless of whether they’re friend or foe, ears up and tail frantically wagging in greeting. Back in the yard he follows them along the fence line or dashes over to the door with a smile and when his buddies pass out of view he whines for them to come back and play. Not every dog is as good-natured as Archie and his new parents will need to work on taming these enthusiastic how-do-you-do manners to make sure no one misunderstands and ‘gets their back up’ when he tries to make friends. Archie knows how to sit on command, takes treats very nicely from my hand and seems to be quite house trained. On leash he pulls strongly at first but once in harness he’s walking like a pro within just a few steps, a very smart cookie indeed. Only a year old and barely out of puppyhood, Archie still managed to ace his behavior assessment with near-perfect scores right across the board and he’d be a great fit for any active family, especially one that includes some four-legged siblings. Awesome Archie is at our Manhattan Care Center, ready and waiting to wow you!
BEHAVIOR:
Archie pulls hard on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Archie was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Archie did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Archie was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful.
Archie did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away
Toy 1. No interest.
