07/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roxy came into our center as an owner surrender. It is reported she has visited with children and got along with them. Owner reports Roxy was not welcoming to strangers. According to the owner Roxy did not live with any other animals but did have playdates with other dogs, being respectful and tolerant. Roxy appeared eager to chase a cat she saw while on her way to the SAFER assessment area. She walked nicely on leash, no pulling. Roxy allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity, body soft. Roxy followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. Roxy mouthed the assessor’s hand during Squeeze item, no pressure. She lifted her head out of the Food dish when assess-a-hand was applied to cheek. Roxy had no interest in Toy. She engaged with Rawhide and relinquished it easily. Roxy approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, tail at spine level, body relaxed. Due to her discomfort with some tactile handling and selective behavior regarding strangers, the Behavior Team feels Roxy would do best in an Experienced home with no Young Children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before consideration. Roxy might benefit from initially entering a calm, quiet, structured environment so she knows what to expect and can relax in her new home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, body soft. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
