06/18/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/18/15 16:06 Pesto was brought here by a man after he went home to find that his 11 year old brother had been given a dog by a man in the building. Pesto and the boy were running around and playing and then cuddling on the couch. The little brother had Pesto for one day but his family wouldn’t allow him to keep him. The man doesn’t think the dog was walked because he hasn’t seen him before and he seemed afraid of the stairs. Pesto had a very loose, wiggly body, wagging tail, and open mouth during handling-scan (-), collar, petting, positioning for pictures, putting in kennel (he allowed us to pick him up and put him in).
06/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Imagine coming home to find your little brother or sister cuddling on the couch with a large dog in your non pet friendly apartment….fast forward a day and Pesto is now with us looking for a new home. He’s a gorgeous dog, well groomed in his light caramel color coat with white socks and neck band, and clearly well taken care of. He’s a cuddler and loves his belly rubs, rolling into my legs and over for a rub right on First Avenue! Way to go, Pesto. He’s also energetic and active, playful and fun and everything that a young dog should be. He seems to be housetrained ‘going’ as soon as we were out the door and then bounces happily on the leash as we head to the park. There isn’t a dog of any size he doesn’t want to meet, and happily and enthusiastically greets them all. Off leash in a pen he comes when I call him, happily tosses around a plush toy and then dismembers it (RIP plush toy), runs after a ball, and then back to me for more cuddles. Through this all his tail wags, his eyes sparkle and he wears a big smile. Pesto is all big puppy and is looking for an active home who will help usher him into adulthood with proper reinforcement training. He’s well on his way to being a rockstar grownup – he just needs you!
06/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pesto was very excited when entering the assessment; he was sociable toward the assessor- soft body, fast wag. He seemed a bit uncomfortable being restrained by his collar during handling and repeatedly turned quickly toward the assessors hand when reaching for his collar during handling items. He follows the assessor with a soft body during the tag interaction and settles quickly once the game ceases. Pesto ate faster, was stiff and difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He kept a firm grip on the toy and rawhide, but had a loose, wiggly body. Pesto was brought to the care center by a finder who had him in his home for one day. While in the finder’s home, Pesto played with an 11 year old child and cuddled with him. Upon intake, Pesto had a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail. The Behavior Department believes that due to Pesto conflicted behavior while being handled, turning quickly toward the hand but having soft body language and his mildly concerning behavior around food, he would do best if placed with an experienced owner with no young children that is prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Also, we believe he would benefit from obedience classes and being taught “drop it” and trade-up games, as he kept a firm grip on all resources. If older children are in the home, an in-depth interaction should be conducted prior to adoption. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1&2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body a bit stiff. He does lift head when moderate pressure from hand is applied to cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Pesto is social and playful.
