A volunteer writes: Hellllooooo gorgeous! What a perfect way to end my day; walking a beautiful, well behaved sweetheart of a dog. Nelda has that ‘it’ thing going for her – that indescribable something that makes her stand out in a crowd. She has a beautiful face, an elegant, yet playfully, sassy way about her. Her coat is stunning and well groomed, her weight perfect for her size, and even her intake notes indicate that she’s friendly and doesn’t show any handling problems. She’s happy to see me, leash in hand, knowing this means a walk and a chance to relieve herself. She goes potty as soon as we are out the door, showing off her housetraining skills. Although she pulls on the leash a bit, she’s easy to handle, responsive and tail waggy sweet. She posed for photos perfectly, sat when I asked her to, and swept her reward treats gently from my hand. Off leash in the backyard she was happy to greet other dogs who came over to say hello, and happy to let a staff person who wanted to meet her give her some loving. We played with some tennis balls, Nelda teaching me how to retrieve and throw again smile emoticon, and she had a great time in the chase. Her new pet parents can teach her how to retrieve. After some play, we sat together, Nelda’s head in my lap for some quiet time petting. Nelda joined us with her two housemates Sandy (A0989589) and Max (A0989590), all social and friendly dogs. Nelda rocked her behavior assessment indicating she’ll be a good fit in most homes. With her elegant demeanor, soft, friendly and easy personality I know she’ll be a rockstar in her new home. Ask to meet our Nelda today.
02/11/2014 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nelda was relaxed, but distracted and focused on objects in the room during handling and during the tag test. She did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Nelda kept the toy and the rawhide, but had soft body language. She rushed in confidently toward the helper dog, but showed no aggression. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward. Helper: A0991261 2/11 Additional Dog-Dog Investigation: Nelda shows signs of discomfort and anxiety around other dogs both inside the care center and outside. She does not appear to be offensively aggressive but may be reactive in close proximity. Nelda needs an experienced adopter willing to countercondition her underlying anxiety and keep her and the dogs around her safe while out on walks. However, when outside with a dog she previously lived with, Nelda remains calm and quiet, even when he becomes reactive. Nelda will need an experienced adopter willing to provide her with the guidance she needs to become a confident, successful family pet.
