03/24/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Wow, is this guy majestic or what? With the brightest eyes and and most beautiful fur of any dog at the Care Center, Jack is a real head-turner and the compliments abound as we step outside and the spring sunshine lights up his coat of many colors. Unlike his nursery rhyme counterpart, Jack may not exactly be nimble or quick, but he’s certainly not going to let a little limp spoil his fun! We’re not sure exactly what’s going on with one of Jack’s back legs as he’s not putting any weight on it but he’s still more than happy to take a long walk through the park, keeping up a brisk pace and meeting an off-leash husky who wants to sniff and play with his happy tail held high and nothing but the best possible manners. Jack seems to be incredibly house trained, peeing a river the instant we step outside and using the facilities frequently during our walk and he’s very good on leash, eager to explore (and taste!) everything around him but responding quickly whenever I make a request. It’s impossible to resist sinking my hands into all that amazing fur and luckily for me he’s fine with gentle petting and handling, though a slow approach is always preferred and he is sensitive to having his paws touched, giving a little warning growl to let me know I shouldn’t handle them. Jack may have been found as a ‘stray’ but his nice weight and silky soft coat didn’t keep themselves in shape and until very recently he must have had a home and people who cared for him. We’re hoping that this unique and gorgeous boy will soon be back where he belongs, in an understanding home surrounded by the warmth of a loving forever family.
04/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jack spent several weeks in a home environment, and was found to demonstrate aggression toward cats in the home. For this reason Jack should not be placed into a home with cats or where he may have access to cats. He can also be difficult to handle on leash. We recommend a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address these issues before placement into a permanent home. 3/24 SAFER: Jack walks calmly on leash. He may be house trained – toileted immediately when taken outside. Jack was stiff and did not show social behavior during the assessment. He was uncomfortable with handling; he stands tall, sometimes on his tiptoes, and tries to look large. His hair was standing up along his back. He makes direct eye contact. He wrinkles his muzzle to expose his front teeth. He was growling loudly and preparing to lunge forward. We decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Jack growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test and snapped at the assess-a-hand during the toy and rawhide test. Jack approaches the helper dog with his tail at spine level, body not stiff and lip long. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. Dog freezes and growls Food: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy: 4 Dog growls and snap Rawhide: 4. Dog growls and snap. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Helper:A1030944
