A volunteer writes (as told by Dutch): Hi everyone! My name is Dutch. In no particular, order these are some of my favorite things: belly rubs, snuggles, walking on leash (I’m good at it), going potty outside, hanging out with my person, treats, other dogs. My new friend, Volunteer, called me a loveable lug, whatever that means but I know she likes me as she kept giving me a belly rub and laughing. I’m pretty handsome (even if I do say so myself), and have good energy and like to play. I get vocal when I see other dogs as I get excited to meet them. A staff person told my new friend Volunteer that I’m super sweet so I wagged my tail at both of them to show them how really sweet I am. I can be playful and energetic, but also am really happy just to chill out when it’s that time. So, if you’re looking for a handsome companion with good energy, who loves belly rubs and chilling out than I’m your man and you should ask to meet me.
05/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Dutch came to our center after a member of the public found him as a stray. He is energetic and pulls on leash. He was unfocused and pulled out of assessor’s hands each attempt at Look. Dutch was difficult to position for Sensitivity item, displaying high energy and jumping up, but accepted the touch. He followed at the end of leash for Tag game, but grabbed leash and played tug-of-war at the end and was difficult to redirect. Dutch was hard to position for Squeeze, but did not pull his paw back during either attempt. He ceased eating and lifted his head when he was approached by assess-a-hand during Food item. Dutch had interest in both Toy and Rawhide, keeping a firm grip with a very loose, wiggly body. He barked at helper dog during dog-to-dog interaction, approaching with ears neutral and tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Dutch would do best with an Experienced adopter that can help him positively direct his high energy. He may benefit from obedience classes to teach him leash manners, body awareness, and focus. Dutch may also benefit from mental and physical enrichment in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, as well as enrichment toys such as Kongs and Nylabones. Dutch is a strong, high energy dog who needs training, but he was social and friendly throughout assessment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement. His body is soft, panting, may jumping up between attempts. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash. Squeeze 1/2 : 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy 1: 1. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, vocalizes.
