05/06/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Drake is laying plastered to his door, caught between his desire to go for a walk and his fear of a new “world” he does not know. He accepts a treat and my leash but I have to pull to help him make his move. Off we go to the street. Drake’s tail is glued to his hinds but he walks at my pace. He eliminates as soon as we are out, and without marking. Quite a number of other dogs are met, big and small, males and females. Drake does not show much interest, more preoccupied, I think, to stay afloat. He does not mind being tethered in the park for picture taking, sits immediately on command and looks right at my camera. Drake is a beautiful boy who seems to have been well cared for. His perfectly groomed coat is glittering with copper and gold in the sunshine. His weight is perfect. He was someone’s pet just yesterday. He looks and looks back at children playing soccer or in the playground. He is very insisting and his tail wags for the first time. Drake might have lived with kids. We sit in the shade for some rest. Drake takes a treat and drinks from the portable water cup I brought with me. He seems more relaxed, settles with his “tush” on my foot and looks at me, his little tongue sticking out then …with a smile…I pet his head, then his body. Drake is fine with my advances…little steps in the right direction. Drake needs a bit more time but mostly a home to feel comfortable. I am hoping that meeting other dogs in a playgroup might might “lighten” his heart and open the door to his soul. Drake is at the Manhattan Care Center. I know that he is dreaming of a home sweet home and the love of a human. A Volunteer Writes: Drake should really have a blog or a video feed so that you all could get a sense of the power and passion behind Project Drake. This Shepherd mix had all of us-employees and volunteers-tied up in knots of heartache when he first came in, so frightened he just curled up in the back of his kennel shaking. Now, we high five each other as he walks with us to the park with such happiness! He is perfect company… Today he lay down at my feet in the sun and we hung out watching dogs and people and scooters and squirrels and nothing upsets him-and he really likes other dogs–and I pretended he was my dog for an hour and it made me so, so happy. You don’t have to pretend-lucky, lucky you. Lucky Drake. What a life this dog is so, so close to having…please, can’t you see this dream through?
05/05/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Drake is fearful of the shelter environment; he walks with a low and fearful body language. He was extremely fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. Drake becomes frightened during the tag interaction, tail tucked, and trying to exit room. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Drake was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. He does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is fearful and needs time to warm up. Drake needs an adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, or repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit, Dog may be crouching ,tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Helper:A1034988
