05/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Napkin came into the care center as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She has been social and easy to handle since intake. She exited the kennel quickly and pulls on leash during her relief walk. During the SAFER assessment she is high-energy and active, and mouths the assessor a few times but applies no pressure. She is jumpy, jumping up onto the assessor’s lap each time she sits, but all behaviors appear to be affiliative and social. She was active between SAFER items and difficult to position, but showed no aggression. She engaged with each resource item but allowed each to be touched or removed. Napkin will need adopters willing to provide her with daily mental and physical exercise and guidance on acceptable interaction with humans, but based upon the behaviors seen during her SAFER assessment we feel she is appropriate for an adopter with average experience. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure, then licks Assessor’s hand. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Napkin is tolerant when greeted but has a stiff body posture with ears pinned back and a flagging tail. She will actively approach the helper dog to interact but maintains a stiff body posture.
04/30/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Napkin is tolerant when greeted but has a stiff body posture with ears pinned back and a flagging tail. She will actively approach the helper dog to interact but maintains a stiff body posture. 5/2 update: Napkin continues to exhibit these same body postures when initially interacting. Once more comfortable she may offer play bows and try to mount; she takes correction well. 5/3 Update Napkin is interested in engaging with a female but is a bit pushy in her attempts to engage. She places her paw over the back of the other dog who is tolerant of this solicitation 5/4 Update Napkin offers bouncy play bows to a male who does not reciprocate play.
