*** HE JUST WANTS OUT ***A volunteer writes: Cruz is one of the most beautiful dogs I’ve ever seen, an adorable boy with fur of the softest velvet and eyes to match, his markings stunning and his cute freckles the perfect finishing touch on a precious puppy masterpiece. Unfortunately, he’s also one of the worst models I’ve ever seen! Trying to catch a photo of Cruz isn’t easy as he flits from one end of the yard to the other, sniffing the air, climbing the walls and standing hopefully at the gate with his ears tucked and his nose pressed against the wire. Even a tossed tennis ball or some tasty treats don’t hold his attention for long and I’m about to despair of those little legs ever taking a break when suddenly another dog enters the pen next door and Cruz is riveted! He circles, he play bows and he whines to be close to his new friend as his frantic tail wags a mile a minute. Clearly the path to his heart is made for a four-pawed approach and it would be wonderful if Cruz’s adoptive family included a doggie sibling or two to help him settle into his new home. He pulls a little on leash but is easy to handle and seems to be quite house trained too, keeping a clean den and taking care of all his business quickly. Though Cruz is responsive to my voice and happy to let me pet him all over, he’s still very distracted and occasionally tries to climb up the walls of buildings we pass. Like a frightened child lost in a maze, this sweet boy is so upset by the unexpected turns his life has taken that indoors or out, he anxiously searches for an escape route. A calm, nurturing environment with loving parents and some four-legged friends to keep him company is all the escape he needs, will you be the one to help sweet Cruz find his freedom?

04/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cruz was difficult to remove from his kennel he was in the back of the kennel snapping at the leash. Once he was out he walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Cruz was shy and nervous and trembled during handling, with a fearful body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Cruz did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Cruz was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Cruz was a bit fearful during the assessment but he stay close to the assessor. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is somewhat fearful and need time to warm up to the handler. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog – dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper:A1031755
