04/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes (as told by Joya): Hello out there! My name is Joya which in Spanish means ‘jewel’ as in the jewel/pride of whatever. And I am! The only family I ever had (2 adults, a 6 year old, and my cats) left me here because they said they didn’t have time for me anymore. I played with the cats all the time; I like cats. I know ‘put it down’ (sit), ‘lie down’, ‘give paw’, am housetrained, crate trained, get along with everyone, and love other dogs. A lady named Volunteer took me out for a walk and she complimented me on going potty right away, and told me I have a beautiful coat, gorgeous eyes, great ears, she loved my two white socks on my front paws and loved how I wagged my tail all the time. I’m TINY, so even when I pull on the leash a little bit I know you can manage me. I like treats and take them gently. There was a big dog in the pen next to mine and I play bowed to him to let him know I liked him. I was so excited I got to play with other dogs, and can get a little submissive even though I’m having fun. I did really well on my behavior assessment here, although I didn’t like my food being taken away, so the team here feels I may need an experienced person to make sure I don’t have food issues. In summary, I lived with and played with cats, kids, love other dogs, am small and manageable, petite and gorgeous and in need of a new home. Who’s going to be the lucky person to adopt me?
03/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Joya was excited but social toward handler during the assessment. She was easily aroused during the assessment and would become distracted easily and somewhat hard to position during assessment items, but her body remained loose and wiggly. She engages in play during Tag, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open, but she does jump up and mouths the assessors leg. Joya ate faster, was somewhat stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. She was minimally interested in the toy and rawhide; she mouthed both but allowed the items to be easily relinquished to the Assessor. Joya was surrendered to the care center by previous owners who had her for 2 years. The previous owners stated that Joya lived and got along with children. She also lived with cats and is said to have played with them. Her previous owners also stated that she is an active dog who likes to play. During the assessment, Joya demonstrated a high level of energy and became easily excited, her body remained loose, wiggly throughout. She ate faster, was somewhat stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. The Behavior Department believes that due to Joya’s over arousal and potential to guard food, she would do best in a home with an experienced adopter who could safely manage and positively modify this behavior if it manifests in the home. If there are children in the home we would recommend an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps up and mouths Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. She does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy& Rawhide 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper dog playfully, tail high and wagging, body loose, ears forward. Helper Dog: A1029550
