10/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Chico spent the better part of the past two years living in a yard, but you would never know it! He is crazy sweet, magnetic, loving, well-mannered, and is even working on his first manuscript! Here are some excerpts from The Art of Charm, by Chico. Chapter One: Should you find yourself in a new place, where you don’t know anyone or anydog, be your friendly self, but don’t be afraid to show that you feel vulnerable. Submissively roll over if someone looks at you and you don’t know what to do with yourself. Stay for belly rubs. Chapter Two: You are very handsome, shiny, and physically fit, but there is no need to flaunt your strength. Walk nicely on leash, stay right at the side of your new friend and look up often with soft eyes. That’s what I do, and I have all the volunteers dotting the i in my name with a heart. Chapter Three: Always know where the toilet is; relieving myself outside and keeping my cage clean has earned me lots of praise. Chapter Four: Be just the right amount of cuddly. When I’m called over I’m quick to prop my paws on a new friend, give gentle kisses, and wag my tail in circles to show how happy I am to be in their company, but am not overbearing. Chapter Five: Play, have fun, and relish the little joys in life. I recently carried a stuffed teddy bear in my mouth for three blocks!!! What a treasure! Chapter Six: When working towards a goal, be patient and don’t be afraid to ask for help. I’m writing this from Brooklyn ACC, where everyone appreciates my charm, but I want nothing more than to move into a home and charm the same person, day after day! Another volunteer writes: Chico is a small gentle pooch. He walks nicely on his leash. He really appreciates a stroll in the neighborhood. How about your neighborhood? Chico will fit right in. Come meet this sweet boy. You will be glad you did. Another volunteer writes: Chico is a great young dog. He is a small dog who is very gentle on his leash. Did I mention that he loves treats? Come see this fella now!

Chico previously lived with 3 adults and 1 child as well as another dog. During SAFER Chico came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Chico was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment on food item he allowed his head to be pushed out of the food bowl with a bit of pressure, toy item he showed minimal interest and rawhide item he freezes when attempting to remove the item away from him. Due to some concerns with rawhide resource the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no children. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. 09/17/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Chico was initially nervous and uncomfortable when interacting with other dogs. He would allow brief interaction but was tense and growled when his face was approached. He growled and hard barked at another male through the fence. Recently he has been less uncomfortable, sniffing dogs briefly and soliciting play with some dogs. However, he still remains tense when greeting most dogs. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior department recommends Chico can be placed into a home with a female dog but advise against placement with another male dog at this time. Due to his nervousness, we recommend Chico be placed with a calm, respectful dog. When off leash with other dogs, Chico is nervous but allows the helper dog to sniff him and may sniff them briefly in return. 9/18 update: Chico allows greeting but is fearful and will make himself small when being sniffed. He may explore the pen and when another dog nears he will outstretch to briefly sniff them. He is more interested in seeking attention from handlers. 9/19 update: Chico allows brief greeting but may growl when a dog approaches his face. He appears more comfortable with some dogs and may become sexually motivated. 9/20 update: Chico continues to be uncomfortable while socializing with dogs off leash. He will allow a brief greeting but maintains a stiff body throughout the interaction. He is more interested in seeking attention from handlers. When greeting a male through the gate he begins to low growl then hard barks and is not easily distracted. 9/23 update: Chico greets well and is interested when solicited with gentle play, but he does not engage. 9/24 update: Chico is nervous but shows interest in interacting when approached but does not engage in play. 9/25 update: Chico allows greeting and will approach the other dogs to briefly sniff.
