07/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Buster lived with two adults and the owner stated Buster has been around children. Buster was reported to be relaxed, affectionate and respectful towards everyone he meets, but also has a bite history which the owner states is triggered by yelling or tension between two people. Buster also lived with other dogs, and the owner stated he did not do well with them and has several altercations, but when around other dogs outside the home, buster was reported to be playful, and he also gets along with cats. The owner stated Buster does not guard his food or toys, and he enjoys baths. He was also said to be housebroken and does well in a crate. At intake Buster was reported to be calm and allowed all handling, but when his owner left he became stiff and growled not allowing the counselor to approach. During SAFER Buster was sociable towards the assessor and allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. During the resources portion of the assessment Buster was easy to push out of the food bowl while eating, but was not interested in the toys or rawhide items. Although Buster did very well on SAFER, he seems to have an identified trigger (yelling), and due to the severity of the behavior reported by the owner (escalating to a bite, likely multiple times, bite severity unknown) and the reported altercations with other dogs in the home, we suggest placement with a New Hope partner who can provide Positive reinforcement behavior modification to address these behaviors seen in the previous home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest.
