07/28/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Rocky reminds me a little of the book by Maurice Sendak: Where the Wild Things are… I can also see in him… Felix the Cat. Rocky is a dog, though, a pet whose owner forgot to feed at times and cropped his ears with the unsuccessful attempt to make him look mean. Rocky is as thin and bendable as a vermicelli. His legs are tall, his nails long and his eyes are intense mostly when he looks at food or treats. He is as hungry as a bear. Rocky walks well on the leash, does his business as soon as he is out of his kennel and meets peacefully other dogs. Despite his dismal treatment, Rocky does not hold a grudge against us humans. He knows he depends on us for survival but he can also still see who is a friend. He comes when called, wiggling his body and wagging his tail, accepts caresses, comes on the lap and gives kisses… He is not wary one bit. Rocky has still in him all what is needed to turn around and indulge in life in the hands of a loving and caring human… Rocky is at the Manhattan Care Center, ready to be you very spoiled forever best friend. Come and meet him soon.
07/26/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rocky came to our center when he was found tied to a pole. He was very calm and quiet with no signs of aggression while being transported to the center. Rocky jumped up and shoulder rubbed on the assessor throughout Look item, making it unable to complete that portion of the assessment. He leaned in and licked his lips during Sensitivity item, tail wagging, body soft. Rocky was unresponsive and distracted during Tag game, needing coaxing at end to approach the assessor. He quickly pulled his paw back on first Squeeze attempt, but did not pull his paw back on second attempt. Rocky ate consistently quickly throughout Food item, requiring a bit of pressure to remove his head from Food bowl, but was not stiff. He had no interest in Toy. He never settled with Rawhide, taking it away, but was loose. When off leash with other dogs Rocky is sexually motivated and will continue to attempt to mount once corrected. The Behavior Team feels Rocky would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation In the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, and play, as well as obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus. His fast eating behaviors may minimize once his weight is stabilized and he is receiving structured, consistent meals in a new home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth, tail wag. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls paw back. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
