A volunteer writes: Bringing new meaning to the phrase ‘puppy dog eyes’, handsome Bradly is a real heartbreaker in both looks and nature. He’s a shy yet friendly guy, skinny and scared of sudden movements but grateful for petting and absolutely thrilled by the presence of other dogs. When a stocky Bull Terrier approaches our pen, Bradly’s ears perk up, his tail uncurls and he bounds over to the fence where the two boys bounce along like mirror images, tails wagging and smiles beaming. Out in the street this lanky hunk is timid once more and as we stroll along he tries to make himself as small and non-threatening as possible, walking slowly and cautiously…until he spots another pup and like magic, up pops that happy tail again! Responsive to my voice, easy to leash and seemingly house trained, when it’s time to return to his den Bradly makes it clear he’d rather not but quietly allows me to coax him back inside and onto the bed. It’s no surprise that when it came to his behavior evaluation this gentle boy was a tad intimidated and the word ‘fearful’ is used more than once but just look at how well he did in spite of that fear, earning good scores on all the handling tests and taking his rawhide very nicely too. Bradly is still so young, only 2 years old, and he has a lifetime to learn that with the right family the world can be a happy place full of love and kindness…will you be the one to light the way?
09/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bradly walks with a low fearful body language on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Bradly was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She became very fearful while playing tag. He ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. Bradly was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away but had soft body language. Bradly may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address his possible food guarding behavior. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Bradly is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. The behavior department advises that future adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Bradly. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Kayla be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 2.
