06/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Binky is as spunky as he is beautiful and at just 5 years old, he’s practically a baby in little dog years! I’ve never seen such unusual markings on a Chi before and he garners lots of admiring ‘awwws’ from passersby as we walk down the street. The world is Binky’s oyster and he’s hungry for adventure, his little legs keeping a steady pace and that adorable curly tail wagging happily at all he sees. I can pick him up and snuggle him on my lap but Binky doesn’t like me to rub his backside and our vets think he may have some issues with his ‘plumbing’, though it doesn’t stop him taking care of business as soon as we step outside. Binky’s happy to show off his front leg begging and hind leg walking skills and while my treats aren’t up to snuff, he still politely sniffs them before turning away. He performed very well on all the socializing and handling portions of his behavior assessment with the only mark against him being a tendency to guard his food, an issue that can be addressed with positive-reinforcement training from his new parents. A sweet, sociable guy who seems to get along wonderfully with people, dogs and even cats (we ran into a friendly stray during our walk), Binky would make a charming addition to any dog-savvy home, please step up for him today!
06/08/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Binky was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He allowed all handling to be completed with ease. He was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction. Binky growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test. He had no interest in toys but growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the toy test. Binky was brought to the care center as a stray; he growled during handling upon intake. He was friendly toward the assessor and allowed to be easily picked up out of his kennel, however, he growled when being picked up to be put back in his kennel. Binky has bit the hand during the food and rawhide portions of the assessment, and for that reason we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 5. Dog bites the assess-a-hand. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 5. Dog bites the assess-a-hand. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
