04/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Astra arrived at our center as an owner surrender when her family moved to a residence that does not allow pets.It is reported she lived in a home with adults and small children and loved to play ball with the children. She was calm upon intake and allowed collaring easily by admissions counselor. She walks nicely on leash and came in and out of her kennel easily. Astra was focused on leaving the room for a majority of the assessment. She was tense during Look item but allowed her head cupped in assessor’s hands with eyes averted. She was also tense during Sensitivity item, but allowed the handling with her tail down. During Tag, Astra was unresponsive to the assessor, not fearful, but did not engage in play. She approached the assessor easily at the end of game. It is reported from her previous owner that Astra would growl if her food bowl was taken away. During Food item, Astra allowed the dish to move forward, and lifted her head out with alot of pressure on first pass, but growled and attempted to bite the assess-a-hand on second pass. She kept firm grip with wagging tail on Toy, taking it to the door to leave. Astra growled and tried to bite assess-a-hand with rawhide. Due to her potential for guarding behavior with food and rawhide, and her uncomfortableness with some tactile handling, the Behavior Team feels Astra should be placed with a New Hope Partner. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit stiff, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food: 5. Dog growls and tries to bite. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide: 5. Dog attempts to bite Dog to Dog: social but when interacting can be a bit forward and pushy

A shelter staff member writes (04/23/15):
Astra was surrendered to BACC because her owner was moving, and could not take her along. Astra is a sweet Lab mix who has previously lived with children, and loves to play with balls and squeaky toys! She has been very social while in the shelter, and seems to enjoy playgroup. Astra did display some resource guarding during her SAFER, and her new family should be prepared to manage that behavior in the home. Please help Astra find a great place to call home, and pull her online TONIGHT!
