A volunteer writes: “Rhino is super friendly and sweet around strangers. He lived with 3 children ages 8, 10, and 12 years old. He was very sweet, respectful and playful with the children. He plays gentle with children and adults.” Previous information per his former owner who surrendered Rhino as he cannot afford pet care and received Rhino as a gift. Rhino is an awesome fellow and as the first walk of my day was the perfect set up. He’s gorgeous: a low rider blockhead with a wagging tail and great leash manners. What a joy! He wagged his tail in his kennel when I approached as if saying, “Why yes, I’d love a walk, thank you”, and his lovely manners continued. We’re told he’s “very housetrained,” and indeed took care of all his business promptly as soon as we were out the door. He’s all about snuggles, happy to meet a human who likes to snuggle, head in my lap, or a big stand up hug, we were both happy with either! Off leash he comes when called, and as he was still a bit stressed at his surrender (I met him the day after), wasn’t interested in my treats or toy. Rhino wagged his tail in friendship at other dogs we passed on our walk, and in group is still a bit stressed on his first day in. When I took my leash down from the outside hook he wagged his tail excitedly, as to him a leash means he’s going out. Sadly, in this case it meant we’re going in… We’d love nothing more than for Rhino to have a lifetime of leashes meaning, “Yay, I’m going for a walk!”. This gentle proven family boy is ready to find a new family to love. Who’s going to be the lucky one?
09/11/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rhino did well on his SAFER assessment and has been social with his caretakers in the care center. However, he has demonstrated some concerning behavior in a home environment that we feel needs additional investigation and possible behavior modification work before placing into a permanent home. Rhino has growled at, lunged at with ears pinned back, bitten (without breaking skin), and circled with a low body and staring, all directed at his caretaker in the home, and all without any clear trigger or provocation. 8/24 SAFER: Rhino pulled during his relief walk. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body soft. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, ears back, body soft. Rhino ran during Tag game, but was distracted and unresponsive to assessor at each pass. He calmly allowed the Food to be moved, and lifted his head out of Food dish when assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. Rhino playfully engaged with Toy and Rawhide, keeping a firm grip and play hopping away whenever approached by assess-a-hand, loose body. He required a trade up to relinquish Rawhide. When off leash with other dogs Rhino greets politely at the gate but once introduced he becomes stiff. He may benefit from being the only resident dog. Rhino may also benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, body awareness in regards to jumping up, focus, and the command ‘drop it’ as well as trade up games. He may do well with daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play to positively direct his high energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Holds gaze for three full seconds, soft eyes, soft body, allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Stands still, accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. does not pull back paw, tail wag, playfully jumps on assessor at end. Food: 1. calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps firm grip, loose wiggly body Rawhide: 2. Dog takes Rawhide away, firm grip, loose
08/21/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Rhino greets politely at the gate but once introduced he becomes stiff and corners the helper dog. He jumps on her and does not respond to her correction and will only stop when offered correction from handlers. 8/26 update: Based on his previous interaction and potential to escalate Rhino is muzzled for this interaction. He allows brief greeting but is distracted by the muzzle and does not interact any further.
