11/08/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A chocolate Lab! Who does not like and admire them? They seem to be all over in my neighborhood and at all times…A member of the breed arrived at the Manhattan Care Center and is waiting for you to meet him….Vinny, yes, that is his name, is a bit stressed and we are giving him some time to decompress, taking him for walks, settling him in a large pen for him to get to see other dogs and staff passing by. He seems to like other dogs very much, females in particular, of course and even has met some in a playgroup….Lots of tail wagging when he meets another pooch and looking at them in awe as he rests in an adjacent run. Vinny was tranquilized when he was brought to the care center and came in quite “knocked down”..Then he was “put under” again as the dart had remained into his thigh..He must think to himself: “what are those humans doing?” I wish we could explain to him…. I guess, poor Vinny has to recover from all these happenings. He is coming along and most likely will be as good as new very shortly. Vinny is a gorgeous Labrador Retriever, well cared for, healthy and wearing the most gorgeous and shiny chocolate coat. He walks well on the leash, can sit on command, absolutely loves treats that he kind of grabs from my hand and I forgot, seems very much house trained. Gorgeous Vinny is waiting for a Lab lover to meet him and take him home as a forever best friend.
11/10/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Vinny was difficult to remove from his kennel showing teeth, growling and lunges at the rope. Once he was out Viiny pulls a bit on the leash. He became stiff and did not show social behavior he stands tall and makes direct eye contact. He was growling loudly expose his front teeth. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Vinny is not an appropriate candidate for full SAFER at this time. The behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Vinny growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the toy test. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Toy: 5. Dog attempts to bite When off leash with other dogs Vinny engages in sexually motivated behaviors–approaching the female and whining while standing behind her but not actually mounting. He responds well to correction when the helper dog becomes uncomfortable.
11/06/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
