09/21/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/21/15 14:41 Basic Information: Trey is a 3 year old male Pit bull mix. His owner had to give him up because it was against her landlord’s rules to have a dog over 25lbs. She had him for three years and got him as a gift. The last time he went to the vet was last year. The two things his previous owner liked most about him were; he’s quiet and attentive. Social Life and Personality: Trey has not been around children, or other dogs. Around cat he barks. He is not house-trained and has accidents daily. Trey was kept indoors only and has a high activity level. Trey can be described as, playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate and friendly. Behavior Issues: Trey defecates and urinates indoors and is sometimes hard to control. If someone touches his food bowl, treat or toy while he’s eating or playing, he is friendly. He is also friendly if he is given a bath or if he is pushed off the furniture. Trey isn’t bothered if his feet are touched. He is friendly if he is held/restrained. If someone unfamiliar approached his home he would bark but was friendly if an unfamiliar person approached his owner. For a New Family to Know: Trey knows how to sit and come. For exercise he went on slow walks on leash 2-3 times a day. He likes to play with balls and squeaky toys. His favorite game is tug. When his previous owner was in the home he would follow them around and when he is left alone he sometimes destroys shoes. He isn’t bothered by storms/fireworks. He ate dry dog food and at night he slept on the living room couch. Behavior during intake: Trey was very exuberant. He allowed handling and jumped up for attention. He sat, gave paw and went down for treats. Trey showed no signs of aggression.

A volunteer writes: Surrendered by his person due to weight restrictions in her apartment we’re told that her favorite things about Trey is that he’s “quiet and attentive”. I liked Trey from the moment I met him as he lifted his head to be scratched under his chin like a cat. He sat in front of me to give me easier access to his chin and it was so sweet! He’s a gorgeous, elegant long limbed brindle boy, who sits when asked, shakes paw and goes into a down for a treat. So smart! His leash manners are lovely, he went potty as soon as we were out the door, and he was social in group, engaging in “gentle and dainty” play with a female. We’re told his favorite game is tug, he sleeps on the couch at night, and when home alone will chew on shoes if they are left out. Out back in a pen he’s playful and when he saw a staff person who had shared his hamburger with him the previous day was so excited to see him. I’m sure he was hoping another hamburger would be his! So funny. Trey is a terrific dog, well mannered and affectionate, hoping to find a new person to love quickly. Ask to meet him today and remember to put away your shoes when you leave him alone.
09/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
While interacting in a social group, Trey climbed onto a bench next to a handler who was initially not paying attention to him. When she turned and looked at him he growled and lunged toward her. He did not snap or bite, but the suddenness, rapid escalation, and lack of clear trigger cause us to feel that placement with a New Hope partner is best at this time. 9/24 SAFER: Trey pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Trey was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. Trey took the toy away with a soft body language but he became stiff during the rawhide test. Trey was surrender to us. His Previous family described him as a playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate and friendly. Trey has not been around children, or other dogs. Around cat he barks. The owner stated that if someone touches his food bowl, treat or toy while he’s eating or playing, he is friendly but during the assessment Trey show some possible guarding behavior. Trey may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address his guarding behavior. In addition to food behavior modification protocol we recommend teaching Trey “Drop It” and trade-up games. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter without children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Or, dog licks hands while lips are long. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Food: 3. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff.
