06/10/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
Tiger was growling upon entering the apartment possibly protecting his territory. According to the neighbor and super, he growls and lunges at people and other dogs. Safety equipment/pole was used to get him into the van. He resisted being guided with the pole but more fearful behavior and body language, low body, tugged tail, were displayed rather than forward aggression. Upon arrival at the shelter, he walks well on leash but was very nervous. He allowed soft muzzle and vaccination without displaying any aggression.
06/17/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey Tiger — getting radio signals through those ears? Tiger has the best ears ever — pointy, reaching for the sky! His coat is gorgeous, striped and elegant and thus his name, Tiger. Joining us with his housemate, Noodle, when found abandoned in an empty apartment, other than being too thin he’s in great shape. He showed off his sit, took a treat super gently, loved playing fetch and let me take the ball right out of this mouth, and is sweet and friendly. His face radiates intelligence and good will, and you can tell he’s just a nice dog. He jumped up on the bench to sit beside me, stealing a quick kiss before jumping down to gently greet a dog in an adjoining pen. In group, he ignores other dogs and is tolerant of all, even the overly energetic ones. He’s simply stunning both inside and out, and is looking forward to beginning a new life with you, today. We’re rooting for him, so come meet Tiger today!
06/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tiger was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He was calm, with a soft body throughout handling. Tiger was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction, but had soft body language and approached the assessor with soft body when coaxed at the end of the game. He was push out of the food bowl with moderate pressure and his body was a bit stiff. He playfully engaged with the toy and kept a firm grip with a loose, wiggly body; he took away the rawhide, body a bit stiff. Tiger was friendly toward the assessor throughout the assessment. However, he shows potential for possessive behavior over rawhides and has a tendency to pick up food items when walking on leash. The behavior department believes Tiger would do best in an experienced home that can monitor and positively modify these potential guarding behaviors if they manifest in the home. He would likely benefit from learning “Drop It” and trade-up games. If there are children in the home, an in depth interaction should be conducted prior to adoption. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is low and wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after moderate pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is a bit stiff. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral.
06/16/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Tiger greets politely, will correct pushy behavior appropriately and then wanders the yard. 6/17 update: Tiger greets politely but is more interested in exploring his surroundings. 6/18 update: Tiger greets politely but then becomes stiff once introduced. He allows greeting then offers a lip curl when the other dog continues to attempt to sniff him.
