11/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
While appropriate and affectionate with humans, Taz has shown some challenging behaviors with other dogs, indicating a need for behavioral intervention and behavior modification to help Taz learn to play appropriately with other dogs. Please see the GroupBehavior entry for additional details on this behavior. We recommend an experienced adopter prepared to safely manage Taz’s behavior and to keep him and the dogs around him safe and comfortable, in addition to providing the behavioral support Taz will need to be a successful family pet. 11/17 SAFER: Taz came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Taz was friendly and energetic, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Taz came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly, social and playful towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Taz joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Taz was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Taz appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns on his behavior evaluation. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed, licks hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed, licks hand. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Taz greets briefly and will attempt to engage in play but seems to lack appropriate play skills. He may escalate slightly by hard barking toward the other dog when corrected.
11/10/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Taz can be intense when playing and may have a playstyle rooted in prey drive. He appears to lack the appropriate skills to engage in proper play. Due to his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Taz can go to a home with both male and female dogs. However, we recommend that a pre-adoption interaction be required. Taz lacks proper social skills and has the potential to develop dog related issues in the future if he does not recieve the proper socialization and training. We recommend he be placed with someone that understands his issues and are willing to provide the appropriate resources to help him learn to better socialize with other dogs. Due to his lack of proper play skills, we also caution against off leash interactions or dog parks until his play skill deficit has been addressed with behavior modification and/or supervised appropriate interactions with suitable helper dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Taz greets politely and attempts to solicit play. He becomes vocal and pushy when soliciting and may become frustrated if the other dog does not engage in play. 11/11 update: Taz tries to solicit play but is very pushy and vocal. He does not appear to have learned the appropriate skills for proper play. 11/13 update: Taz greets briefly and will attempt to engage in play but seems to lack appropriate play skills. He may escalate slightly by hard barking toward the other dog when corrected. 11/17, 11/18 update: Taz engages in play but is intense and may have a play style that is rooted in prey drive. He can be pushy and mouthy when playing.
