1057358 – Mellow – 4 month pittie pup – 20lbs – Owner Surrendered – Green Medical Behavior!
Mellow was brought to us because the owner is moving and unable to keep. He seems to walk a bit funny however, he is still full of love and kisses. Mellow should have an orthopedic doctor examine his front 2 paws.
11/13/15
This pup is noted to have carpal hyperextension. Full discussion is provided in my 11/13/15 @5:48PM memorandum. In short, evaluation of Mellow by a veterinarian with significant orthopedic experience is recommended to assess his long-term orthopedic health. Many of similarly affected dogs live long and happy lives; the orthopedic evaluation will inform the best management practice for Mellow’s optimal health.
[ 11/13 exam ]
Mellow is noted to have carpal hyperextension (carpal laxity syndrome). He, like other dogs with this syndrome, does not appear to be in pain, but a mechanical lameness may be possible in the future. It is recommended that Mellow be evaluated by a veterinarian with significant orthopedic experience to assess his long-term orthopedic health. Many of similarly affected dogs live long and happy lives; the orthopedic evaluation will inform the best management practice for Mellow’s optimal health. There is no widely agreed-upon reason for Mellow’s carpal hyperextension: it may be due to different growth rates between his bones and tendons in that area, genetic influences, poor nutrition or too much nutrition. In any event, there’s no science to support any one of these notions. As well, the associated treatment theories are widely varied: raising the puppy on surfaces providing good traction, providing a balanced diet, splinting or not splinting the front legs, regular exercise, restricted exercise, doing nothing.
Im summary, Mellow should be evaluated by a veterinarian with significant orthopedic experience to assess long-term health.
