09/03/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hello, world! This is Stevie. He is wonderful, sweet, gentle, and charming. He lived with and was surrendered with a smaller (but just as wonderful!) female dog, Josie. Stevie seems to be the more shy half of the pair. His former owner reports that his behavior around children, strangers, and animals outside of the home is unknown, so I suspect his world was limited to Josie and the two adults he lived with. I’d say he’s doing amazingly well in the world of strangers, cages and other dogs he finds himself now — so well, in fact, that he managed to sweep me off my feet! He is usually curled up in his cage; he seems to prefer the ground to his bed and has an adorable way of tucking his front paws under his body. When I first met him he needed some coaxing to walk and kept his tail tucked most of the time. The universal language of food seems to help very much in reassuring him that he is safe at my side — though his tail was still tucked, he quickly wagged it when I offered him treats. His bottom teeth peek through when he lifts his head to sniff for them. He is much less timid now, wagging his tail on walks and when I strike up a conversation with him. He has kind gentle eyes and was always attentive, but now looks up at me with the most handsome smile! He has good leash manners, seems housebroken and seems to have an ideal middle-aged energy level. Stevie softly wags his tail when checking out dogs in neighboring cages or adjacent areas of the yard. He loves to be petted, and even when he was more of a scaredy cat, he was utterly cooperative when I wiped his eyes and even when I tried to dress him up in a T-shirt! Hello, world! This is Stevie. And you could be his world!
08/29/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stevie previously lived with 2 adults. The owner stated Stevie is house broken and has a very high activity level. The owner mentioned Stevie like to play, petted and hugged; the owner also mentioned he pulls strongly on the leash. During SAFER Stevie came into the assessment room calm and shy, he was a bit social towards the assessor with a slow approach, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Stevie was fearful and unresponsive during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Stevie was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Stevie has been showing fearful behavior. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Stevie is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Stevie be given the opportunity to interact at his own pace, so the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is tucked with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, lip licks. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs Stevie greets politely but is more interested in exploring his surroundings.
