09/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jack came into the care center as a stray so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He has generally been social and interactive, though has shown a wide range of behaviors including some warning signals. When collared at intake he began barking and growling, and when picked up during his medical exam he snapped at the handler. He tends to recover quickly, but did show some signs of anxiety (pacing, panting heavily) at intake. Jack allowed all SAFER handling items without issue, though he alternated between being loose-bodied and wiggly and becoming slightly tense, and he pulled his paw away quickly during Squeeze but did not escalate. He did not engage with any of the resource items and showed no concern when they were removed. During playgroup Jack greets appropriately but has been more interested in sniffing around the pen than in interacting with the other dogs. Due to the range of behaviors Jack has demonstrated and the quick escalation to certain triggers, which appear to be related to close human proximity and certain types of handling, we recommend an experienced adopter who will allow Jack to warm up to his new home and new family at his own pace; we also recommend an adult-only home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with a slightly tense body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Food: 1. Minimal interest in food, dog may smell or lick, then turns away. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Jack greets the other dog briefly before exploring his surroundings.
08/29/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
