09/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Joining us with his housemate Ruby A1050175 when their owner ran into some difficulties, Smokey is always excited to come out to play some ball in the backyard. He goes potty first and then is ready to play! He’s energetic and playful, keeping his eye on the ball, tail wagging brightly as he waits for another throw. Leaping after it he brings it back, sometimes dropping it close by or other times crawling under the bench with his ‘prize’. When two balls are in play he runs to each, dropping one to pick up another, sometimes trying to get both in his mouth at the same time. When other dogs come into the adjoining pen Smokey greets them with a wag of his tail, but comes running back to me when I throw the ball again. Energetic, gorgeous, and affectionate, Smokey is looking for an active home, and hopefully one who enjoys a game of fetch as much as he does. He’s young, bright, friendly and fun ……are you the person who’s going to provide his “happily ever after”?
09/13/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Smokey came to our center after he was found crammed inside a small crate with another medium sized dog in the hallway of a building. He was sweet and gentle during intake. He pulled hard for his relief walk. Smokey entered the SAFER assessment room with a lot of energy, social and very wiggly. He pulled out of assessor’s hands during three Look attempts. Smokey stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, mouth open, tail wagging. He was distracted and unresponsive during tag game, towards the end he vocalized and hopped as if to play along, tail wagging. Smokey did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, focused on other stimuli in the room. He lifted his head out of the Food dish when assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. Smokey kept a firm grip on Toy and Rawhide, body loose and wiggly, tail wagging. The Behavior Team feels Smokey would do well in an Average home. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus. He may also benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation In the forms of walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct his high energy and enthusiasm.
