09/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ruby is always curled up so quietly in her kennel, almost not believing that I’m there to take her out. Yes, you Miss Ruby! She’s shy amidst all the barking dogs, new smells and constant activity, and trembles a bit as I leash her. Likely housetrained she takes advantage of being outside in every way. She’s quiet and unsure, but off leash in the backyard joins me on the bench for some hugs, and greets other dogs through the fence with a happy wave of her tail. It’s clear she’d love to join in some fun. She slowly lights up and I can see the change in her eyes as she begins to smile and relax. She joined us with her housemate Smokey (A1050174) when their owner ran into some difficulties. Ruby is a bit too thin, her coat is a delightful light tan color, and she has the most amazing smile which warmed my heart. Gentle and shy, I suspect that with more time she will open up even more and show us a playful, snuggly, warm personality. Coming when I call her and hopping up again on the bench to sit beside me, the basics of a loving, sweet girl are all there; she just needs to feel safe again.
09/13/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ruby came to our center after a member of the public found her abandoned in the hallway of a building along with another medium sized dog, both crammed inside a small dog crate together. Upon intake, she was very sweet and gentle. Ruby was a bit fearful during her initial medical exam but allowed all handling when spoken to gently. She was a bit apprehensive in the SAFER assessment room, trembling. Ruby allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body neutral, tail down. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip lick, ears back. Ruby followed at the end of the leash during Tag game, a bit cautious. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail down. Ruby lifted her head and ceased eating when assess-a-hand approached her cheek in the Food bowl. She had minimal interest in Toy and Rawhide. Ruby approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ,head low, ears back, tail at spine level and slightly wagging. The Behavior Team feels Ruby would do well in an Experienced home that is comfortable with nervous fearful dogs. She may need time to warm up to any new situations and unfamiliar people. Ruby may initially do best in a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect in her new home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body neutral; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body neutral, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit cautious. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, tail down. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push her out. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest, dog smells, licks, then walks away.. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper dog submissively head low, ears back, slight wag.
