I was quite hesitant to take Rebel out for a walk. He looked beyond wary, sitting at the back of his kennel. A huge dog I might not be able to handle if he did something “funny”… And such a name…was not engaging at all… I kept walking other dogs in his ward and dropping a treat(he did not eat)as well as an encouraging word each time I passed in front of his den. What an attractive dog ! And a sad story…His owner died..No one to take care of this huge orphan…. Poor Big Bird.. That’s it..We are going out…Rebel’s body shrunk as I opened his door. He did not know what to do with his head as I tried to lasso him..Eventually with a lot of back and forth, we make it to the yard where Rebel gallops to the gate overlooking the street, then retreats in a corner like a punished child. I give him some time, some room and we start all over again, walking at a better pace and finally settling in a pen where he sits upon my command at a shorter distance from me. He sniffs but does not accept my treats. He is fine with my caresses, my cleaning of his eyes and even gazes gently at me from time to time . Rebel was earlier in the day part of a playgroup with other dogs where he mostly stood by. Rebel is a magnificent dog, a masterpiece who has been outstandingly cared for by his defunct master. He is scared here at the care center and I bet he did not act anywhere like this while at home. I was glad, though to see that when I left the care center last night, Rebel was laying behind his door and not at the back of his kennel anymore… Rebel, like most Cane Corsos, should go to a connoisseur of the breed. He is a real marvel and I bet a good dog. Do not make him wait too long. Rebel is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center for his new master.
