A volunteer writes: Are you ready to rock?!!! Ralphie (he’s far too friendly to be plain ol’ Ralph) is a great big hunk of love and chock full of happy, playful energy, the perfect big-hearted boy for ‘big dog people’. Life is for the living and Ralphie knows it; he runs and leaps after the ball, pulls enthusiastically to meet his four-legged friends and when I ask him up on the bench for snuggles the experience is like wearing a pack of puppies — paws and kisses everywhere! But don’t think he’s all brawn and no brains, this good boy knows his commands for come, sit and stay and follows them like a pro at all times. Until his owner was evicted Ralphie lived in rambunctious harmony with 5 other dogs (though cats are a no-no) and we’re told he gets along well with children and strangers too. A harness is a must for walk time as he’s had little experience on leash and is so excited to see a doggie pal that it’s literally all hands on deck to reign him in when they meet! Ralphie performed well on his behavior assessment and received excellent scores on everything from resource sharing (though he has a tendency to guard his food per his previous owner) to handling, even going so far as to lick the assessors hand when his paw was squeezed! With a heart as big as a whale and strength almost equal to one, an active family well-versed in handling large dogs would be the perfect match for our resident red-headed hunk. Ralphie waits patiently and dreams of freedom…will he be celebrating it with you?
10/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ralph pulls hard on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Ralph was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Ralph was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away, body language was stiff. Ralph was surrendered to us. According to his previous owner he gets along with children and strangers. Around dogs he is friendly, playful and rough. The owner stated that he won’t put Ralph around any cats. His owner also notes that he pulls hard on leash, and he may guard his food bowl around humans and other dogs. Due to these notes, we recommend an adult-only home for Ralph, and adopters who are comfortable safely managing the food guarding behavior, should it manifest in his future home. We also advise against a home with cats or where he may come into contact with cats. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Lick hand Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. When off leash with other dogs, Ralph greets briefly but is sexually motivated. He takes correction for attempting to mount but will eventually persist.
