10/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: True to her name, this petite and pretty tomboy is always in motion and snapping her picture is like trying to catch the wind. Whether flitting from one end of the yard to the other, playing a rousing game of chase with her person or sniffing each and every tree on the block, no one stops the Freeway! But don’t mistake that vocally energetic in-kennel attitude for hyperactivity, once leashed up Freeway is actually a good, responsive walker who takes care of all her business street-side and meets passersby with happy, relaxed manners. Though sociable when greeting other dogs through the fence once loose in playgroup Freeway can get, as my Nana would put it, ‘a bit too big for her britches’ and will need to learn that not everyone likes to be jumped on and sometimes a lady should just back off politely with her dignity and temper intact. A winning smile, a friendly nature and an open heart can take you a long way in life and now that Freeway has aced her behavior assessment she hopes they’ll take her all the way to a loving new family. Next exit — Forever home!
10/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Freeway pulls a bit on the leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. Freeway was calm and relaxed during handling. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Freeway was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Freeway did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1: No interest. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. When off leash with other dogs Freeway is assertive. She will jump on the helper dog and muzzle punch and growl. She does not respond to correction from dogs but will relent when handler correction is offered. 10/3 update: Freeway has shown concerning behavior around other dogs, causing us to feel that she requires an experienced adopter. Please see the GroupBehavior entry for additional notes. Freeway remains social and soft-bodied around her human caretakers.
09/30/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Freeway is assertive. She will jump on the helper dog and muzzle punch and growl. She does not respond to correction from dogs but will relent when handler correction is offered. 10/1 update: Freeway briefly greets then jumps on the helper dog. When correction is offered she becomes over aroused and escalates. She is difficult to slow down and will continue to pursue the other dog once he has walked away. 10/3: Due to the behaviors seen with other dogs, Freeway’s escalation to correction and persistence in spite of the other dog moving away, we recommend an experienced adopter who can ensure that Freeway and the other dogs around her are kept safe. Freeway is no longer going into playgroups in our care center due to the risk of an incident. We do not recommend off-leash dog parks for Freeway until her behavior around other dogs is addressed. We recommend a positive reinforment-based behavior modification program to help teach Freeway appropriate play behavior and to read and appropriately respond to the signs of the dogs she is interacting with. We also recommend that Freeway be muzzled whenever she is in the presence of other dogs, due to her increased arousal level when corrected.
