07/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1040880 Pretty lady was found as a stray, and her finder states she briefly lived with 2 adults and 1 child. She was reported to get along with children, but not strangers and was said to be a nervous dog. Her finder stated she has a bite history, and has bitten the finder during play, but we have limited information as to the severity of the incident. It was also reported that she does not do well with other animals. During SAFER Pretty Lady appeared to shy of sudden movements around her head and neck, but with a slow approach she was tolerant of collaring, and allowed all SAFER handling items to be conducted without issue. She was a bit fearful during the tag interaction, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. During the resources portion of the assessment Pretty lady became stiff and did not lift her head when pushed out of the food bowl. She also became stiff and lip curled when the assessor attempted to remove the toy items, but showed no interest in the rawhides. During the dog-dog interaction Pretty lady rushed in quickly towards the helper dog with stiff body language and was very vocal (barking). Pretty Lady has displayed fearful behavior while still being tolerant of touch and handling, such that it is difficult to get a confident read on her behavior. Pretty lady also shows potential possessive behaviors over food and toys. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit tense and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food: 4. Dog freezes Toy: 4. Dog freezes and lip curls Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in while barking. Her tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect.
