12/29/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Marco! Polo! You don’t need to look very far, because Polo is right by your side. Such a good walker! Whenever I take out a dog, I expect some degree of pulling. The park near the Manhattan ACC has squirrels, kids on bikes, sometimes discarded French fries – plenty of things to distract a pup – but Polo was Mr. Manners. This orange and white creamsicle dream would be the perfect date for a walk in the park or around your neighborhood. Just leave a little extra time for people to fawn over his cute mismatched ears. Polo is ready to meet you today at ACC! Another volunteer writes (as told by Polo): Hi everyone! My name is Polo and I was brought here by the only family I’ve ever known when they moved someplace I couldn’t go. This is my studio apartment (aka a kennel), and I like to keep it clean and neat. I love meeting new people and going out for a walk and do really nicely on leash. I’ve met a lot of nice people here but it’s strange because they all have the same name – Volunteer. Anyway, they all tell me I’m a good boy and how much they like walking me because I don’t pull. I get really excited when I meet new people and sometimes jump on them which I know I shouldn’t. I’ve met some dogs here and when they play bow to me I play bow back….I have good manners! I hung out with one of the people named ‘Volunteer’ and gave her kisses and sort of draped myself in her lap so she could pet me. She didn’t seem to mind at all. I’m ready to find a new person or family to take care of, and would like them to be experienced so they can teach me better manners, like a better way to greet people other than jumping on them. I just get so happy to meet them I sometimes can’t help myself. So, please come meet me when you visit and let’s spend our lives together.
12/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Polo came into our center as an owner surrender citing living situation challenges. He is described as sociable and would greet strangers by jumping on them in excitement. Owner reports Polo is very tolerant of children who would visit the home. Owner reports Polo would allow anyone to play and grab his food, toys, treats. During intake, Polo was extremely excited with loose wiggly body, wagging tail and open mouth. He solicited attention by jumping onto staff laps, he allowed all handling. Polo slightly pulled on leash during his relief walk. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, fast wagging tail. Polo leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, fast wagging tail open mouth pant. He originally followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, but began to play towards middle of game, jumping and popping his body. Towards end of game, Polo began jumping harder and appeared to escalate to mounting, requiring a few minutes to settle down before positioning for Squeeze item. Polo did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip while taking it away, loose body. Polo was sexually motivated while off leash with other dogs. The Behavior Team feels Polo would do best with an Experienced owner. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds, fast wag. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth, fast wag. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, starts to play by second pass, escalates to mounting at end of game. 12/28/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Polo greets, often offering play bows when greeting males and females through the gate. However, once introduced he attempts to mount the helper dog, not responding to correction. His owner reports that he approaches dogs to sniff, but has not been given the chance to interact. Based on this information the behavior department recommends Polo have a pre adoption interaction before being placed into a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Polo offers polite greeting. He displays sexually motivated behavior and follows the female greeter, attempting to mount. 12/29 update: Polo is sexually motivated and does not cease attempting to mount once correction is offered.
