05/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Leelu came into the care center as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was noted that Leelu appeared to be nervous and was not receptive to introductions. She was also reported to be fearful during her medical exam, and an attempt to snap at a technician. Upon entry to the assessment room Leelu was extremely fearful, and became stiff and uncomfortable when approached by the assessor, but did appear to be receptive of a slower approach. Leelu was tolerant of some handling, but her body was stiff and she would not allow the assessor to conduct the paw handling, but did allow the flank “squeeze” without issue. During the resources portion of the assessment, Leelu did not lift her head when pushed out of the food bowl, and had a stiff body with a tucked tail. She was not interested in the toys, and only showed minimal interest in the rawhides. When the handler attempted to remove the leash from her collar, Leelu became stiff and snapped at the handler. Due to this behavior alongside the observations seen on SAFER, the department recommends placement with a New Hope partner, so the behavior concerns can be more fully explored before adoption into a permanent home. Look: 3. Dog’s will not allow the assessor to hold her head, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog is crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog’s body is stiff, and moves her leg so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Flank squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, her tail between her legs, ears are forward. Her body is stiff. Dog does not lift her head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog sniffs, then turns away. Dog-dog: when off leash with other dogs Leelu is initially nervous, greeting with her tail tucked, but over time she becomes more comfortable and will solicit play with bows to a male helper dog.
