08/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Looking for a companion who is ready to do whatever you want to do whenever you want to do it? Meet Neo!!! Neo means ‘young’ in Greek, and is also the name of the character played by Keanu Reeves in The Matrix Trilogy. Pretty impressive credentials for our little four legged Neo! As soon as we were out the door, this little bunny eared fellow peed enough to help the drought situation in California! He’s tiny in stature but big in personality, pulling on the leash in his excitement to be out for a walk. Ignoring other dogs in the park, he settles down for some pictures, not minding being tethered and giving me a big smile. I LOVE how his black whiskers contrast with his light caramel coat, his eyes sparkle, and he has a great big smile. Up on the park bench for some snuggles, he leans in close burying his head in my neck. Off leash in the backyard he does some playful zoomies and would rather play with me than with a toy I toss. In group with other dogs he greets politely, offers appropriate correction if needed, and is more interested in human interaction than the other dogs. Neo is all about people, happiest when snuggling, playing, or any activity involving his person. If you’re looking for a new best friend who’s up for anything as long as it’s with you, than Neo is your man (er…dog). Ask to meet him today!
08/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Neo was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, licked hands and face. He allowed all handling to be conducted with ease and his body language remained soft. He engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open. Neo was moderately difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had neutral body language. He was easy to handle when playfully engaging with the toy, but he took the rawhide away with a stiff body. Neo was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake he had a soft body and allowed all handling to be conducted. Neo remained friendly and playful towards the assessor during handling but took away the rawhide and became stiff. Due to Neo’s potential to become possessive over rawhide, the Behavior Department feels Neo would do best in an experienced home with no young children that is comfortable monitoring and positively modifying any potential guarding behaviors if they manifest in the home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, leaning into the assessor. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 2.Quickly pulls back paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body neutral. Dog lifts head after moderate pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Neo is social, playful, and takes correction well.
