07/29/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/29/15 15:32 Maggie was brought to ACC because her owner was staying in a shelter and got kicked out for having her with her. Maggie had a litter of 8 puppies 6 weeks ago that have been rehomed. She’s had multiple litters. Maggie follows her owner everywhere, cuddles with her, and sleeps with her at night. She stays with her other owner while he has seizures. She’s friendly, relaxed, affectionate, and tolerant with children of all ages and with strangers. She barks at dogs she sees outside. She’s friendly and relaxed with the cat she lived with. Maggie is housetrained and doesn’t have accidents. Maggie had a soft body and wagging tail during handling-scan (-), collar, petting, positioning for pictures, switching leashes, and putting in kennel. She walked nicely on her leash and went into her kennel when asked. She allowed me to pick her up and put her into the van.
08/04/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Beautiful Maggie is like a delicate orange butterfly, flitting here and there around the yard, anxious and very much aware that this is not her home and I am not her beloved family. She was a mother to many litters and a loyal companion to her owner, now unable to care for her, and the sad shift from following at her person’s heels and snuggling up together at night to being left alone in a kennel with only strangers to comfort her is taking a toll on Maggie’s sensitive soul. We’re not together long before she breaks into quiet, pitiful whining but she’s still keen to get out and about and walks well on leash, hopping along ahead of me, using the facilities promptly and meeting passersby with friendly manners. Maggie is said to be relaxed, gentle and tolerant with children and she even lived in happy harmony with a cat! By all accounts this red-headed cutie is a regular Miss Congeniality and in a savvy home where she’ll be given all the time and TLC she needs to recover from her losses, Maggie will once again shine brightly as the special star around which her loving family revolves.
08/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maggie came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported she lived with a cat and is relaxed and tolerant of children of all ages and with strangers. She had soft body and wagging tail upon intake. Owner reports Maggie had a litter of puppies, unsure of how long ago, possibly 4 weeks. She whined and cried upon entering SAFER assessment room, appearing anxious and looking around. Once positioned, Maggie allowed all handling. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wag. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wagging, ears back. Maggie became aroused quickly during Tag game, whining and jumping up, but settled quickly at end. She did not pull her paw back at both Squeeze attempts. Maggie allowed the Food bowl to be moved away, and lifted her head when assess-a-hand was applied to cheek. She had no interest in Toy or Rawhide. Maggie approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, tail above spine level, body relaxed. As we walked away from the interaction she whined loudly. Due to Maggie’s anxiousness, the Behavior Team feels she would do best with an Experienced adopter who will give her time to decompress from her current stressful situation which may include environmental stimuli as well as separation from her recent litter of puppies. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog whines, jumps, becomes overly aroused quickly, approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
