09/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: No one pulls off cropped ears like Mia, and her four white socks, white tipped tail, brown eye patch and painted on lips put her in the running for a best dressed award, too! She is quiet in her cage, but waits patiently at the front and solicits attention with soft eye contact. She is very friendly, but not over-bearing, and in every new face she sees a friend. When staff members we pass in the hallways say “hi,” she manages to brighten each of their days with her waggy tail. She is easy to handle on leash and seems housebroken. When I throw her a plush toy she adorably paws at it, trying to find the elusive place I squeezed to make it squeak. She loves to be pet and has the most beautiful smile. Her previous owner describes her as obedient and gentle and left lots of positive information supporting my gut feeling that Mia might just be what dreams are made of! She is described as being well-behaved and affectionate when interacting with kids, other dogs, and even cats! She is good on leash and off, indoors and out, and isn’t bothered by loud noises or a bath. In the house she liked to be where the people were and would follow her owner around. Are you looking for the best shadow ever? Mia would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
09/17/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mia previously lived with 1 adult and has been socialized with children, cats and dogs. The owner stated when she is around them she is relaxed, respectful and tolerant, Mia can be somewhat rough when she is playing with children and dogs due to her size. The owner mentioned she is gentle when she is interacting with cats. It was reported by the owner Mia is well behaved and affectionate when interacting with all three. The owner describes Mia as being playful, confident, excitable, affectionate, mellow, independent and friendly. It was also mentioned by the owner Mia is house trained and well behaved when home alone outside. At intake Mia was social and well behaved, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Mia came into the assessment room with loose body posture, she was friendly and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Mia was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Mia was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Jersey appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, but she can be a bit rough when playing with the children stated from the previous owner, so the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food: 1. Minimal interest in food, dog smells, then turn away. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the rawhide. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Mia is forward upon introduction but will slow down when corrected and engage in rough running play with both males and females. She corrects mounting and will take correction herself when she mounts other dogs.
09/15/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Mia is social and engages in rough play with males and females. She offers appropriate corrections and will take correction when it is offered to her. Based on her behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Mia can be placed into a home with both male and female dogs. She can be exuberant when playing so we advise placing her with other playful dogs as she may be too much for a less playful dog to handle. ****Mia is a social group helper dog**** When off leash with other dogs, Mia greets politely and seems interested but does not engage in play. 9/16 update: Mia is forward upon introduction but will slow down when corrected and engage in rough running play with both males and females. She corrects mounting and will take correction herself when she mounts other dogs. 9/17 update: Mia is social and engages in rough play with playful males and females. She will offer appropriate correction for pushy behavior. 9/18 update: Mia continues to be forward when first being introduced but will quickly begin engaging in rough play.
