03/21/15 14:57 Intake Behavior: Melo was exuberant throughout teh itnake. He greeted everyone by jumping. He was solicted attention and allowed handling. 03/17/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Melo must surely be named for that other New York sports star, Carmelo Anthony, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that when it comes to playing ball, our little guy is the true powerhouse on court! Melo may not be the most graceful athlete around but his leaps are gravity-defying, his footwork is beyond speedy and his defence is so tight that I can actually lift him off the ground before he lets go of the ball! But don’t think that just because he’s a tenacious player this cute redhead can’t chill out and listen, quite the contrary. He’ll sit politely on command for treats (nibbled gently from my hand) or a throw of the ball and as long as we’re not playing keep-away he always comes running when I call. Melo’s an energetic boy and does pull a bit on leash but he seems very house trained and with a little extra practice time he’ll soon have his walks running as smoothly as his game. His former owner tells us Melo gets along well with other dogs, especially small ones, and is friendly with children and strangers too — sounds like the perfect party animal to me! Handsome, talented and so much fun, Melo would make a wonderful pet for your active family and if you’re not Knicks fans he won’t even hold it against you. This superstar may be benched right now but he just can’t wait to get back in the game of life, won’t you give him a second chance to shine? 04/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Melo was returned to us after a day from being adopted due to biting the new adopter’s finger through a cage in the home. Upon intake Melo proved to be energetic and was said to greet people by jumping on them, and allowed all handling. He was maintained stiff body language throughout most of the tactile portions of the assessment, but never displayed any signs of aggression. Melo became a bit over aroused on the tag test, jumping on the assessor strongly but calmed down quickly. He tried to bite the assess-a-hand without warning during the food test. Melo showed some concerning behavior during the toy and rawhide tests – stiffening of the body, but did not snap at or bite the assess-a-hand. Due to Melo’s potential for possessive behavior over resource items the behavior department believes that Melo would do best is placed with a rescue group that can manage these behaviors. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is low, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He becomes quickly over aroused and jumps on the assessor a bit strongly with slightly tense body language. Squeeze 1:2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw, body a bit tense. Squeeze 2: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Food: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy 1: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff.

03/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Melo came to our center on 3/12/2015 after his owner was no longer able to care for him due to owner’s health issues. He is reported to be friendly and playful and enjoy pets and hugs. Melo came out of his kennel easily for his relief walk and walked calmly on leash in the yard. He jumped onto the assessment chair twice to sit down when he came into the SAFER room. Melo tolerated all tactile portions of the assessment, but moved his body as far away from the assessor as possible during both Sensitivity and Squeeze. He allowed the food bowl to be taken away but followed the dish to continue eating. While pushing his cheeks out of the food bowl, Melo gulped the food faster but did allow his face to be pushed out on both passes. At first he had minimal interest in rawhide, but once he was engaged with it he kept a firm grip and moved it away from the assessor with a stiff body. The Behavior Team feels Melo would do best in an Experienced home with no young children, based on his possible guarding behaviors with food and rawhide. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 3. Dog is not fearful and moves body away. The dog is unconnected to the Assessor. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed, moves body away. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff.
