07/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Margia is a one year old sweetie. She is very gentle on her leash. No pulling. She is affectionate and craves human love and care. Margia may just be the friend for life you have missed. Come meet this sweet girl. You will be glad you did. Another volunteer writes: Margia, Margia, Margia! This girl is as sweet and charming as can be! Her cloudy eye adds character and doesn’t seem to bother her one bit. She has good leash manners and seems to have some housetraining. Margia is very food motivated and on several occasions she’s responded when I’ve asked her to sit, lay down, and even give me her paw. She has been calm and seems friendly when we’ve encountered other dogs through a fence or nearby on walks. Margia absolutely adores people and is incredibly affectionate. She is always licking my hands or gently mouthing them (I’m reluctant to even call it mouthing! It is a very, very soft nibble that seems to be a manifestation of her joy at being in the company of her person). She was difficult to capture in a photo because she wants to stay so close. Margia even has her own “spot” – the bench! She can often be found on it, draped over the lap of a staff member (where she could stay forever), or under it when her person is busy (she craves contact, but is not overbearing or rude). She’s also known to take a break under the bench when she needs a break from playgroup! She loves belly rubs, isn’t shy about giving kisses, and is so easy to connect with. Could your couch be Margia’s new spot? She would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
07/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Margia came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have information on her past behaviors in a previous home. Upon intake Margia was reported to be very receptive to introduction and allowed all petting and handling by a counselor. She was also reported to walk very well on leash and was responsive to guidance. During SAFER Margia was very sociable and attention seeking. She maintained a loose body posture for all handling items, as well as the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Margia was stiff and did not lift her head from the food bowl when the assessor attempted to push her out. She was not interested in the toy item, and when attempting to remove the rawhides, Margia became stiff and growled. Due to the concerns seen on the food and rawhide items, we recommended an experienced adopter with no children who is able to provide positive reinforcement behavior modification, should any guarding behaviors occur in a home setting. Look: 1. Dog leans forward to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, her tail between her legs, ears are forward. Her body is stiff. Dog does not lift her head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Margia is social and playful and eager to engage in play. She is bouncy and will jump over the other dogs back when playing. Additional notes: Margia has generally done very well in playgroup, but she did have one incident of escalation with another adult female, resulting in puncture wounds to both dogs. Due to this incident we suggest an experienced adopter who understands slow introductions to new dogs, who can keep Margia and other dogs around her safe, and who feels comfortable deescalating dog-dog tension.
