WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Playful, affectionate, beautiful, snuggly, energetic…..all those words describe our Heather. So happy to come out to go potty, do some snuggling, playing, tail wagging and kissing, Heather was my last walk of the day and it was closing out my day with a “bang”. She has an amazing energy, tossing around a plush toy, doing zoomies in the pen, she goes from 0-60 in seconds, and then the reverse (60-0) as well. She snuggles in my lap and I could literally feel her breathing soften as she sank into me, giving in to the connection we made. She sits when asked, and once she realizes a ‘sit’ will earn her a treat she sits before being asked and takes her treat gently. As other dogs pass our pen she runs up and down, tail wagging excitedly. Miss Heather can get mouthy in play and thinks the leash is a toy with which to play tug, so Heather will need some training to teach her the right way to play. Since she likes treats she should learn easily with positive reinforcement training, consistency and structure. She’s a puppy who hasn’t had lessons in good behavior, and it’s never too late to learn. She’ll need an experienced person to show her the way. This brindle beauty is waiting for her teacher, her friend and her forever home.
12/09/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Heather came into our center as a stray. She was very friendly upon intake, jumping on admissions counselor affectionately. She was a bit mouthy when playing, but listened when told to stop, allowing all handling. Heather bites at the rope when being walked, requiring a second rope in her mouth as she was on her relief walk. She jumped up to lick assessor’s face during Look item. Heather leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, tail wagging. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, focused on other stimuli. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose wiggly body. When off leash with other dogs, Heather engages in mouthy, energetic play. The Behavior Team feels Heather would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. She may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of exercise and play. Heather will need obedience classes to learn leash manners in regards to jumping up and grabbing the leash hard mouthing. Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. 12/05/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Heather engages in mouthy, running play with males and females. She responds well to correction and also offers appropriate correction. Although Heather came in as a stray and we are unsure of her behaviors in a home with other dogs, we feel that Heather could go to a home with another dog that engages in exuberant play. When off leash with other dogs Heather engages in bouncy running play with males and females. She is boistrous but will slow down when offered correction. 12/6: Heather engages in mouthy, energetic play. She offers correction for mounting.
