DOG INFORMATION SHEET Where did this dog come from? Stray – Outside ORIGINAL SOURCE Found as a Stray Does this dog have a microchip? No Animal’s Name: Giuseppe (A1055411) WHY ARE YOU BRINGING THIS DOG IN? Is a Stray – Was Tied Up Describe his behavior: I was a complete stranger to Giuseppe: When I first approached Giuseppe, Giuseppe’s face appeared to be calm / relaxed, tail was wagging, and Giuseppe came right up to me and sniffed my ankles. After sniffing, Giuseppe bumped his head into my lap and allowed petting. Giuseppe appeared to be submissive (ear’s down, tail semi between leg’s, but still wagging, crouched low to the ground) whenever I would raise my voice. Giuseppe pull’s on the leash when excited.
10/31/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Some dogs that find themselves at the shelter seem totally devastated. And then there are dogs like Giuseppe who go with the flow and seem like they’ve just stumbled into a new place to bring the party! He is wiggly, friendly, playful, and utterly adorable. His resting face features the tip of his tongue, always peeking out of his underbite-y mouth. He has a good amount of energy and though he isn’t destructive or unruly in his cage, it’s the ideal place for that energy to get pent up! He can be jumpy and mouthy (playfully), but once he’s burned off some steam is very sweet. He seems to have housetraining, is very food motivated, and loves to chase toys. When we’ve seen other dogs he seems very eager to play. He loves to be pet and even when he’s running laps around me he stops to check in often and let me know how happy he is to be with a friend. Could Giuseppe bring the party to your house? He would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
10/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Giuseppe came in as a stray so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Giuseppe came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly, playful and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Giuseppe joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Giuseppe was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Giuseppe appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Giuseppe appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog licks, then turns away.
10/21/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Giuseppe engages in rough play and may have a playstyle that is rooted in prey drive. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Giuseppe can go to a home with both male and female dogs. However, due to his energy level and playstyle, we recommend that a thorough pre-adoption interaction be required for any potential home with another dog. Giuseppe greets the helper dog with a loose, wiggly body. He solicits play with a bow and a bounce and is receptive of the other dog’s signals. Guiseppe was used as helper dog later in the day. 10/22 update: Giuseppe engages in rough play with other playful males and females. He may become pushy while playing. 10/24 update: Giuseppe is social and attempts to solicit play. He engages in rough play with other playful dogs and may become vocal while playing. 10/28 update: Giuseppe engages in running play with another playful male. He may have a playstyle that is rooted in prey drive. 10/30 update: Giuseppe greets briefly and engages in rough play with a playful female. He can become pushy while playing.
