06/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gerard came into the care center as a stray so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake he was reported to be nervous and gave a low grumbling growl when approached, but he allowed most handling. During SAFER Gerard has a loose body posture when briefly greeting the assessor, but he appeared to be more interested in his surroundings. He was relaxed during all of the handling items, and was distracted during tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment, Gerard displayed some concerns when pushed out of the food bowl; became stiff and bit the assess-a-hand, but was not interested in the toys and rawhide items. Due to the behavior seen on the food item we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 5. Dog bites assess-a-hand. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Gerard is tolerant when greeted and will briefly approach a social female to greet.
