07/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: In the words of another volunteer, Frisbee is a masterpiece! His grey mask makes him fit to be a superhero, his grey and white ears are perfectly mismatched, and everything else about him is as cute as can be. AND as sweet as can be! Frisbee is very friendly and wiggly. He seems very housebroken, and when we’ve encountered other dogs he seems interested — sometimes whining a little and wanting to go greet them. Of course, even masterpieces have their quirks, and Frisbee’s comes in the form of a (hopefully temporary) head tilt. He’s a little off-kilter, but Frisbee is still eager to go on walks and even play. He loves toys and when I throw a tennis ball for him he awkwardly pounces after it, teases me with it and play bows with it in his mouth, before laying down with it in the sun. Though the motion is a little tricky for him at the moment, Frisbee knows “sit,” loves treats, and takes them nicely. He loves to be petted and will prop his paws on me to solicit affection. He can’t hold them up for long as he loses balance, but when I kneel down he wiggles all around to ensure I get all of his favorite spots. He may be seeing the world at an angle, but he takes it all in with a tail wag and an infectious optimism. He is a joy to be with and I know he’ll think you look amazing from every angle — Frisbee would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC! Another volunteer writes: I know Frisbee has been written about before, but I have to say he is my absolute favorite. That (permanent?) head tilt has got to be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Frisbee plays close attention to what you’re doing and seeks you’re approval, and is very eager to please– I have to wonder if he got that head tilt from always looking back at his owner! He knows how to sit for treats, and walks like a dream on the leash.
07/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Frisbee came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have any information on his past behaviors in a home. Upon intake Frisbee was reported to be tense, barking and appeared to be anxious, but he allowed all handling. During SAFER Frisbee was sociable, but occasionally distracted by his surroundings. He maintained a relaxed body posture for all handling items, and was relaxed but distracted during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Frisbee was easy to handle when engaged with the food and rawhides, and only showed minimal interest in the toys. Frisbee appears to be sociable and has not shown any behavioral concerns while in the care center, so the department feels Frisbee can be suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Frisbee is sexually motivated but responds appropriately to correction. He is interested in other dogs but does not engage in play.
