06/03/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Farfalle’s name means ‘butterflies’ in Italian and with her petite body, fly-away ears and playful jumping, it’s clearly the one she was born to wear! Five years young and cute as a brindle button, even in repose her mouth looks like it’s puckering up for a kiss and those sparkling chocolate drop eyes are always happy to see a friend, especially if that friend happens to be holding a tennis ball! Farfalle LOVES to fetch and it seems we could play for hours on end as she eagerly dashes after my throw, dropping the ball not long after she retrieves it and quickly looking up to request another round. At first she hovers low over her prize and will try to grab it again when I reach down (silly butterfly, that’s no way to keep the game going!) but within minutes she’s learnt a new command (‘back’) and when I say the word, obediently takes a couple of steps back and waits almost patiently for me to pick the ball up from the ground. Farfalle enjoys petting and comes when called, and on leash she walks like a dream, taking care of all her business within minutes (both numbers at once!) and always keeping a calm, easy pace. Though she met a male Pittie through the fence with good manners and interacted well with a female dog during her behavior evaluation, playgroup was another matter entirely, and her adoptive parents will need to take things very slowly and carefully when introducing her to new canine friends. In every other respect Farfalle is a perfect little lady who’d fit into almost any active home with ease, and as an added bonus, she’s already spayed and ready to fly out the door immediately. Catch yourself a wonderful, sociable, playful forever friend today, ask for Farfalle by name!
06/08/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Farfalle did very well on her SAFER, and overall in the care center she has been tolerant but not especially social. We have no history on her behavior in her previous home. She has shown some reactivity toward other dogs, which may need to be managed if seen in a home environment. For these reasons we recommend an experienced adopter. 5/30 SAFER: Farfalle pulls a bit on leash. She was not sociable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Farfalle was focused on objects in the room during handling. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Farfalle was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. She was not interested in toys or rawhide. Farfalle was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Farfalle did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper: A1037731
05/31/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Farfalle hard barks and growls when greeting at the gate so she is muzzled. Upon introduction she is stiff and lip curls when approached. When sniffed again she over corrects. Due to Farfalle’s reaction in playgroup, it is recommended that she go to a home environment without other dogs. Her exposure to other dogs should be well managed and that she is provide with behavior modification to address her discomfrot around other dogs.
