A volunteer writes: A gentle giant who thinks he’s a lapdog, sad-faced Eddie is ready to show the world just what a happy hound he can be! Eddie’s a guest of the Care Center due to his owners legal troubles and this gorgeous guy is still feeling pretty stressed out by the very sudden loss of his home and family. Where I would choose to mask my pain with cookies, Eddie prefers to sniff his way around our backyard pen, marking a little here, nosing a little there and checking out every nook and cranny at least twice. After giving him a few minutes alone with his thoughts I crouch down at dog level and almost instantly that keen nose is softly snuffle-nuzzling my cheek instead! Eddie’s not interested in eating treats or playing with toys but he really perks up when another dog passes by, dashing to the fence with a wagging tail and plenty of happy vocalizing. When I sit on the bench he surprises me by laying first his chin then his whole upper body over my knees for petting and kisses and it’s easy to imagine him draped across an entire family of laps in his new home. Aside from a little polish to his doggie greeting manners, Eddie is the perfect ready-made pet so don’t leave a bro waiting, hurry into our Manhattan Care Center and make with the snuggles already!
07/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Eddie came to us on 7/16/15. Eddie was very interested in both the assessor and the environment when entering the behavior room. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. Eddie did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy item, but had slightly stiff body language when chewing on the rawhide item. Eddie proved to be confident during an on leash dog interaction but had relaxed body language. The behavior department believes that Eddie can go to a home with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is a bit stiff. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
