03/24/15 17:20 BASIC INFO Duchess’s finder reported that their friend left her with them 2 weeks ago when they moved. PEOPLE Duchess lived with 2 adults in this home. She’s friendly with strangers and hasn’t bit anyone. Her finders don’t know if she’s been around children. ANIMALS Duchess ignores other dogs outside. Her finders don’t know if she’s ever been around cats. PERSONALITY Duchess’s family describes her as friendly, mellow, quiet, and low activity. She spends most of the day sleeping on her blanket or on the couch. She likes to chew on bones. HABITS Duchess lived inside and slept on a blanket or the couch. She ate wet food only and got people food as a treat. She went on slow walks and pottied anywhere outside. TRAINING Duchess is housetrained and doesn’t have accidents. She sits by the door when she has to go potty. She’s well-behaved when home alone. MEDICAL Duchess appears quite think with her ribs, hip bones, and vertebrae protruding. Her family reports that she will only eat wet food. Her eyes are a little cloudy. BEHAVIOR Duchess has no known behavior issues. She’s friendly with strangers that approach her home/family. She doesn’t mind being moved off furniture. INTAKE Duchess approached and sniffed me with soft body and open mouth while I pet her. She took treats from me super gently. She retreated slightly when I started scanning her (negative) or putting her collar on. When I put treats on the floor, she ate them and did not react to my scanning, collaring, or switching leashes. She looked up for her picture. She stood or lied next to me, quiet, sometimes sniffing the floor while she waited.
03/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: What a beauty Duchess must have been in her prime, her golden fur fluffy as a baby chick, her face round and soft as a teddy bear. She’s still a lovely sight but time and lack of care have left that luxurious fur dull and I can clearly see her spine and ribs as I wrap a warm coat over her back. Though she flinches from body touching, Duchess is a gentle girl at heart and she’s happy for me to scratch behind her ears and softly pet her head, even letting me clean her eyes with no complaints. An easy walker on leash and apparently extremely house trained, being with Duchess feels like time spent with an old friend – no rushing around and lots of companionable silence as she quietly pads along beside me. But don’t let her mellow style fool you, Duchess enjoys getting out and about as much as the next dog and boy, does she love her treats! We were told she’s used to only eating soft food but she’s certainly not fussy when it comes to snacks and laps up my freeze-dried turkey offerings like there’s no tomorrow. Other dogs are met with calm good manners and soft sniffing and her whole demeanor is that of a wise, peaceful elder. Duchess may not have been treated like royalty in her former home but she’s still very regal and with the care of a patient new family that faint twinkle in her eye could soon be shining brightly once more. She’s already spayed and ready to leave immediately for a retirement filled with all the love, contentment and treats she so richly deserves.
03/26/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Duchess walks calmly on leash. She was not sociable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Duchess was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She became stiff and uncomfortable during paw handling. Duchess showed some concerning behavior during the food bowl test – stiffening and growling, but did not snap at or bite the assess-a-hand. Duchess was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away, body language was stiff. She approaches the helper dog with his tail at spine level, lip long and body not stiff. Duchess was stiff and showed some concern behavior during the assessment. She shows some guarding issues during the food bowl and rawhide test.
